NFL fans are roasting Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence over his comments on the $275 million contract he signed last week.
Last week, Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars agreed to a massive five-year contract extension worth $275 million, with $200 million of it guaranteed. It’s far and away the biggest contract in franchise history.
Per John Oehser of the Jaguars’ official team website, the first overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft stated that he even took less money so that the Jaguars could build a quality team around him:
“We can bring guys in or we can keep the guys that we have. That was something that was important to me. It wasn’t worth it to me to sacrifice being able to have a good team just so I could make some money.”
However, football fans weren’t exactly buying Lawrence’s words and ruthlessly put him on blast:
It’s a lot of money for an NFL quarterback with one great season under his belt, but that’s just how the market for signal-callers is these days. The Atlanta Falcons gave 36-year-old Kirk Cousins $180 million in free agency, and he’s coming off a season-ending Achilles tear.
The Cleveland Browns gave $230 million in fully guaranteed money to Deshaun Watson before he even played a snap for them. In Lawrence’s defense, he’s fared much better in Jacksonville compared to Watson in Cleveland.
Through his first three NFL seasons, Trevor Lawrence has completed 63.8 percent of pass attempts for 11,770 yards, 58 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. He has led Jacksonville to consecutive nine-win seasons, including an AFC South division crown in 2022.
Trevor Lawrence & Jaguars Look To Rebound From Tough 2023 Finish
Jacksonville stood at 8-3 with six games to go last season, seemingly poised for a second straight division crown.
But the wheels came off over the final stretch, as the Jaguars lost five of their final six contests. That included a 28-20 road loss in a must-win to the lowly Tennessee Titans in Week 18.
Jacksonville’s road to redemption will begin in South Beach, when they take on Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 on Sept. 8.
