Last night Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov was hurt on hit by Edmonton Oilers Leon Draisaitl and today Panthers head coach Paul Maurice gave an update.
The Florida Panthers have a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Finals. Despite their success, all eyes are now on their captain Aleksander Barkov after he was injured in Game 2. The injury came on a questionable hit from Leon Draisaitl who is unlikely to be punished beyond the two-minute penalty he received on the ice.
After review, Leon Draisaitl received a two minute minor for roughing on this play
Aleksander Barkov’s injury in particular has remained an injury since he went out. This morning head coach Paul Maurice confirmed things could have been worse and he has a chance to play in Game 3.
Maurice on Barkov’s status today: “He wasn’t worse, so that’s a really good thing. The real assessment will be tomorrow.”
He adds that if Barkov continues to make good progress they should be in “good shape.”
With this news from Paul Maurice the speculation has begun. One source believes that Aleksander Barkov is dealing with a concussion which is always a tricky injury to predict a comeback for.
Playing doctor here:
By this, we can assume it’s not a broken jaw for Barkov. That WOULD be worse — swollen, sore, the next day.
So most likely a concussion issue. Which we all know is impossible to predict.
IMO, only way Draisaitl is suspended is if Barkov out. Doesn’t sound out
Now we will all have to wait and see what is next in this process for Aleksander Barkov. Before the two teams play again he will likely get an opportunity to practice. This will be the biggest indicator of his chances to play.
As more updates come in regarding Aleksander Barkov’s health we will pass them along to you.
