Friday turned into a dreadful day for the LSU men’s basketball team as they lost one of their former members, Josh Maravich.
Josh was the son of Hall of Famer Pete Maravich, who had a legendary career in the college basketball team. Like his father, Josh passed away at an early age of 42, in his Covington home.
In his four seasons at LSU (2001-2005), Josh couldn’t make the mark that his father made by being the all-time leading scorer, which had recently been broken by WNBA sensation Caitlin Clark in her Iowa days. However, in his senior year, Josh managed to maintain an average of 18 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals per game.
During an interview with The Daily Reveille in 2005, Junior Maravich stated his desire to make his father proud by playing for LSU. “I knew I wasn’t going to be a star player, but for me being a walk-on was what I always wanted to do,” added Josh. Unfortunately, his father didn’t stay long enough to see his son in the LSU colors.
He might not have followed his father’s footsteps and joined the NBA, but he made an impact on the basketball fans who mourned his demise.
Social Media Reacts to Josh Maravich’s Passing
The NBA fans on social media, who are typically harsh with their opinions, showed empathy and shared some heart-warming comments under the X (formerly known as Twitter) post of Daily Loud.
A fan wrote, “Incredible legacy, rest in peace. His passion for the game will live on.”
While another mentioned, “RIP – both of them (father and son) passed away young”
“Both Pete and Josh died way too soon”, added someone.
One of the comments read, “so sad to hear about his passing, may he rest in peace.”
Wishing well for Josh’s family, a fan wrote, “So sad. May his family be in peace.”
The father-son duo might not have lived too long, but their contribution to the basketball world will forever be cherished.
