Good Morning Britain was halted during Friday’s episode as presenter Sean Fletcher shared ‘breaking news’.

During the latest instalment, hosted by Adil Ray and Kate Garraway, Sean, 50, made a heartbreaking announcement during the news segment. Sean said: “Got some breaking news to bring you. Four people have died in the Channel after their boat capsized trying to cross from France to the UK. 67 people were onboard the boat.

“The French coastguard said 63 people were rescued, so breaking news, four migrants who tried to reach Britain overnight drowned in the Channel trying to reach Britain from France, the French coastguard has confirmed.” The four people died after their boat capsized off the northern French coast near Boulogne-sur-Mer, where several people were reported as being in the water at around 4.30am on Friday morning.

According to the French coastguard, 63 migrants were rescued in an operation involving four ships and one helicopter, including a fishing vessel which picked up 14 of the people who got into trouble. A further four people were taken by a medical team but could not be saved, the maritime prefecture added. The surviving group of people were returned to Boulogne and attended to by emergency services.

Elsewhere on Friday’s show, Good Morning Britain’s Kate and Adil bid farewell to one ITV co-star. During the latest instalment, Jacqui Smith, who has appeared on the show for the past seven years with Iain Dale to discuss headlines, revealed it would be her last episode. This is due to Jacqui, 61, being appointed education minister as she steps away from her media work, including her For the Many Podcast with Iain, 61, to focus on her government role.

Jacqui took to Twitter, now X, before her final GMB episode on Friday, writing: “My last @GMB with @IainDale today. With @kategarraway and @adilray” followed by a crying emoji. Meanwhile, Iain tweeted: “My very last outing with @Jacqui_Smith1 on @gmb after 7 years this morning at 6.25am. Expect tears. Hope @adilray and @kategarraway have ready supplies of Kleenex!”

Appearing on Friday’s GMB, Jacqui addressed her final show with Kate, Adil and Iain left sad over the milestone. As her segment came to an end, Kate said: “Well good luck in your new role, hopefully you’ll be back on the show to talk about serious matters!” with Jacqui responding: “It’s been absolutely fabulous working with you guys by the way! I’m so chuffed to be minister but not doing this, not doing the podcast, is sort of the only downside!”
