The Detroit Lions face an unsettling possibility ahead of the start of the quickly approaching NFL season as they have been handed an injury setback in the form of a hamstring injury to star running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
The 22-year-old is coming off an incredible rookie season. He made it to the Pro Bowl in his first year and helped the Lions reach the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.
Having rushed for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, registering 316 receiving yards and a score from the air, Gibbs is looking forward to year two as he is expected to be even better.
However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the former Georgia Tech and Alabama standout exited practice early on Monday following a leg injury, with his hamstring thought to be the issue.
This is indeed worrying for the Lions and their fans, but they don’t play their first regular season game until September 8 and could hope for the best.
Jahmyr Gibbs Has Set A Sensational Goal For Himself After His Impressive Rookie Season
In addition to his Pro Bowl selection, Gibbs was named to the All-Rookie Team and was a finalist for the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.
He recently told ESPN of his desire to become just the fourth player in NFL history to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, something which has only been accomplished by Christian McCaffrey, Marshall Faulk, and Roger Craig.
“A lot of great receiving backs have done that,” he told the network. “Christian McCaffrey’s done that. AK [Alvin Kamara] has been close. Marshall Faulk has done it. I’d like to be in that category. It’s only a certain number that’s done it.”
Gibbs’ injury is hardly the only worry for the Lions. First-round rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold was also forced off the practice field with an upper-body injury this week, while another first-year CB, Eddis Raestraw Jr., was evaluated for an ankle injury.
