Shannon Sharpe played in the NFL for many years and became accustomed to seeing men his size or bigger barrelling toward him in an effort to tackle him to the ground.
Despite his once fearless attitude, Sharpe is revealing the frightening reason why he refuses to sleep over at women’s houses anymore.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer was talking to former NFL quarterback Cam Newton on the “Funky Friday” podcast when he explained that two separate occasions led him to change his ways, both of which led to unwanted drama with women.
The first incident for Shannon Sharpe was after he was drafted when a man came into the home.
He was getting back into town late and didn’t want to startle his grandmother by walking into the home late, so he called a woman to see if she was single and asked if he could stay at her place for the night. He had no idea all hell would break loose after this.
“Cam, something told, ‘Boy, keep your clothes on.’ So, I got on shorts, and I got on a T-shirt,” Sharpe explained. “Man, have you ever had sleep paralysis? You can hear things, but you can’t move … . I can hear, and it’s getting louder, it’s getting louder, and they’re arguing. So, by this time – boom! The door flies off the hinges. … So, I’m jumping up like, ‘Hey, what’s up, boy, what’s it about to be?’ I said, ‘Oh lord, he’s got some bodies on his resume.’ Yeah, I’m talking about those kind of bodies.’”
Luckily for Shannon Sharpe, the man directed his anger only at the woman, not him.
“I’m saying to myself, ‘Me, too.’ Cam, man, I put my shoes on and booked it out of there.”
Sharpe was drafted in the seventh round of the 1990 NFL Draft after playing all four years at Savannah State University.
Despite how frightening that moment was, it still wasn’t enough to stop him from making the same mistake a second time three years later.
Shannon Sharpe stated he had gone back to Savannah State for homecoming when the Broncos had a bye week during the 1993 NFL season, so he decided to meet up with a woman in the area.
Unfortunately, the situation went terribly as another man showed up at this location, but this time, he came carrying an assault weapon with him.
“I set my stuff down. And I’m looking at the door handle, it’s turning. … Dude, come in. He got that [AK-47]. Oh lord, have mercy. I said, ‘Lord.’ And he look at me, and he said, ‘My man.’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He’s about to ask me if I’m Sharpe. I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘I thought so.’ I said, ‘My man, is this your people?’ He said, ‘Yeah. Two years,’” Sharpe said.
“I said, ‘My man, I ain’t know.’ I said, ‘You know who I am now.’ I said, ‘Man, my bad. You saved me.’ Because if I had not been [interrupted], I ain’t telling this story right now.”
Sharpe made it clear that was the final time he would stay at a woman’s house.
“I have not closed my eyes at another woman’s house in 31 years,” Sharpe said.
Sharpe went on to have an illustrious career with the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens for the next twelve years. His resume includes three Super Bowl titles. He also was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
