Since her 2017 breakthrough single, “Bodak Yellow” took over the airwaves, one could argue that Cardi B has become something of a trailblazer in the female rap game.
The former “Love & Hip Hop: New York” standout spoke with Rolling Stone for their upcoming June 2024 cover story and told the outlet that not only does she believe she’s opened the door for the newest generation of female rappers, but that she’s been told as much by numerous industry insiders.
“These labels was not believing in repping new rap artists. People from every single label have f—— told me this s— in my face,” the 31-year-old Bronx native says. “They started signing new female rappers after I got signed. Whether some b—— could be the greatest rappers [or] they just make good music — at the end of the f—— day, guess what? They’re in your playlist right now.”
“I know for a fact I’m a staple. I know for a fact that I [opened] a f—— door,” she continued. “I know for a fact that I [can] rap. I know for a fact I make f—— hits. Sometimes people be trying to belittle me, and it’s like, ‘No, I’m that b—- and y’all f—— know it.’”
Indeed since following up “Bodak Yellow” with her massively successful 2018 album, Invasion of Privacy, which netted her a number one Billboard album as well as the 2019 Best Rap Album Grammy, Cardi has been consistent in releasing hit after hit including number one singles like “Up” and “WAP” featuring Megan Thee Stallion.
Cardi’s latest single, “Enough (Miami)” has proven to be another top ten charting hit and is slated to appear on her heavily-anticipated and still untitled sophomore album due for a 2024 release.
