UFC CEO Dana White responded to a media member’s claim about Belal Muhammad’s Palestine flag supposedly being taken down at UFC 304. White seemed to suggest that the reporter was attempting to use the sensitive topic of the ongoing conflict in Palestine’s Gaza region and get a comment from him about it.

The UFC 304 event took place at the Co-op Live in Manchester, England, on July 27, 2024. It was headlined by a rematch between Muhammad, an American of Palestinian descent, and Jamaica-born Englishman Leon Edwards. Muhammad became the new UFC welterweight champion by beating Edwards via unanimous decision.

Their first encounter, in March 2021, had ended controversially in an NC (No Contest), as Muhammad was unable to continue after an eye poke from Edwards. At UFC 304, Muhammad finally beat Edwards, besides also making history as the first fighter of Palestinian and Arab descent to win a UFC title.

Muhammad donned the Palestinian flag during his UFC 304 entrance and handed it to his cornerpersons before entering the octagon. Global wars such as the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine conflicts have been hot-button topics in the socio-political realm.

After the Russia-Ukraine war commenced in 2022, the UFC notably implemented a new flag policy, banning fighters and corners from carrying their national flags. Nevertheless, the flag ban was seemingly lifted in late 2023.

During Dana White’s segment at the UFC 304 post-fight press conference, a reporter indicated that two people who seemed to be from the UFC asked Muhammad’s corner to take the Palestinian flag down from the octagon fence. White replied by saying:

“Oh, Palestine flag. Somebody said take it down? Who said take it down?”

When the reporter emphasized that it looked like two people from the UFC did it, White responded by stating:

“Looked like there were people from UFC? Were they wearing f**king UFC hats or … name tags? … I have no idea.”

Upon being asked if the UFC had a new flag policy or something of that ilk, White said:

“I have no idea. I get what you’re trying to do. But I have no idea. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know what you’re trying to do. I know what you’re trying to do. Good try. I don’t f**king — I have no idea. But good try. You guys love to do that sh**. Have a good night.”

When Dana White addressed the UFC’s decision to lift the flag ban

The UFC Vegas 80 (Oct. 2023) event had America’s Joe Pyfer walk out with his country’s flag. During the post-fight press conference, Dana White was asked about it and asserted that the Mexican Independence Day-themed Noche UFC event in Sept. 2023 changed his (White’s) mind about the UFC’s flag ban.

The UFC boss explained that it’s challenging to micromanage everything when running a mammoth organization like the UFC. The Russia-Ukraine conflict precipitated the UFC’s flag ban in 2022. Implying that the ban wasn’t a big deal and was overruled, White said:

“Mexican Independence Day flipped the switch for me, and I was like, ‘That’s enough. I’m done with the no flags.’ If any flags hurt your feelings, too f**kin bad.”
