It’s been almost a year since Victor Wembanyama got drafted by the Spurs. The Frenchman was touted to be the next big thing, and he delivered in his debut season. Following Wembanyama’s footsteps, another French center is gearing up to wreak havoc on the league, Alex Sarr.

Sarr is considered to be among the first two picks in the upcoming NBA Draft. Before joining his compatriot in the league, the towering center was featured in a video with Bleacher reporting to name a player better than Wemby. As per the game’s rules, Sarr was to remain silent until he heard a name better than Wemby. After Rudy Gobert, Draymond Green, Chet Holmgren, and Bam Adebayo’s name came up, and that’s when Sarr broke the silence. According to Sarr, the Heat star is the only one to be deemed better than Wembanyama.

Rudy Gobert took the 2024 NBA DPOY award ahead of Wemby, but to Sarr, the Timberwolves center is not superior despite the accolade. Chet Holmgren, another up-and-coming defensive maestro of the OKC, had some gripping encounters with Wemby this season, but he is not on the Alien level.

With this year’s Draft only a few days away, Sarr has been put alongside Wemby in many mock drafts, but now that can possibly turn into reality.

Alex Sarr Might Join Victor Wembanyama at Spurs

The Spurs currently have picks Nos. 4 and 8 for this year’s draft. With the Hawks possessing the first pick and the Wizards possessing the second one, Sarr is likely to end up among the two.

However, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Spurs might trade their picks and move up to secure the first or second spot. “Sarr is widely projected to go No. 2 overall to Washington, as we covered here Wednesday, but rumbles about [the Spurs’] interest in jumping up from No. 4 to No. 1 by constructing a trade with the Hawks haven’t gone away,” Stein wrote on his Substack.

Sarr has been in fine form for his Aussie side, Perth Wildcats. He averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 27 games this season. His wingspan and rim protection can provide a front-court boost to any side drafting him.

Realistically, the Spurs are trying to build a squad around Wembanyama, and having another center in Sarr might not prove to be a smart selection. But with Greg Popovich at the helm, there might be some innovation in the way that can fit two 7-footers in the same system.
