Stephen A. Smith never shies away from controversy. His opinions have always been loud and strong, and in fact unfiltered. Now he has dropped a curveball that has again made the headlines.

On the show, First Take Smith made a suggestion that the Lakers’ attempt to hire Dan Hurley as head coach was sabotaged by none other than Hurley’s wife. As per Smith, it was Hurley’s wife who played a crucial role in the decision. However, his opinion was challenged by the co-host Molly Qerim.

They thought they had a deal with Danny Hurley...I can assure you there are people within the Lakers organization who believe that Mrs. Hurley made that decision.

Molly Qerim disapproved of Smith’s comment, and countered him with fairness and accuracy, and questioned the validity of Smith’s sources. However, he did not back down to the counters and stood firm on his statement. The debate escalated into a discussion around the impact of companions on major career choices.

Qerim was not convinced by Smith’s opinion and stated that his opinions were not based on solid facts. Moving from one place to another is an important decision between companions and there might be talks between the Hurleys and Lakers management about the head coach position. But Smith’s comments have been drawing him a pushback.

JJ Redick talks about Dan Hurley and Lakers’ coaching

The new Lakers head coach JJ Redick after being hired, came on the media press conference alongside Rob Pelinka and talked about the future of the Lakers and what all he has in store as a head coach. He also addressed the elephant in the room, Dan Hurley.

Two-time NCAA winner, Dan Hurley turned down the Los Angeles Lakers head coach role which was a six-year deal worth $70 million after which Redick accepted the offer. Both Redick and Pelinka denied any ill-will from either side.

Redick also talked about coaching philosophies and championship expectations. He wants the Lakers to become a championship-caliber team next season and will give his best as a coach. Now only time will prove if the Lakers’ gamble on Redick is the right one or not.
