Celtics Fans Chants Kyrie Irving

The stage is set for an exciting NBA Finals series, but for Kyrie Irving, the return to Boston proved to be more gruelling than anticipated. As the Celtics and Mavericks tipped off in Game 1, the TD Garden crowd wasted no time unleashing a torrent of “Kyrie Sucks” chants, reminding

the former Celtics star of the animosity that still lingers.

Irving’s two-year stint with the Celtics was a rollercoaster ride. He arrived with championship aspirations alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, but the team never reached the peak. Irving’s injury struggles and reported clashes with teammates ultimately led to a messy departure in 2019. His decision to sign with the Brooklyn Nets, a direct rival of the Celtics, further strained his relationship with Boston fans.

The “Kyrie Sucks” chants were a stark reminder of that strained relationship. They echoed throughout the game, intensifying with every Irving miss or defensive lapse. Irving, to his credit, remained composed, acknowledging the boos with a slight shake of his head and a focused expression.

Kyrie Irving Struggles as Celtics Beat Mavericks In Game 1

The Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks 107-89 at TD Garden on Thursday to go up 1-0 in the 2024 NBA Finals. Jaylen Brown scored 22 points, and Kristaps Porzingis scored 20 points and six rebounds off the bench. Luka Doncic’s NBA Finals debut was 30-point, 10-rebound, but Dallas trailed for much of it.

The Mavericks had just nine assists and seven 3-pointers. In Game 1, Kyrie Irving had a rough day shooting the ball, finishing only 6 for 19 overall and 0 for 5 from beyond the arc.

Six Celtics added double-digit points. Jayson Tatum scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Celtics reach 16-7 in team history in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

For the Mavericks, trailing 1-0 is nothing new. The Mavericks lost the first game of their playoff series against both the Clippers and the Thunder.

Boston hosts NBA Finals Game 2 on Sunday.
