The Boston Celtics are leading the NBA Finals series with a 2-0 advantage, showcasing their dominance and edging closer to their 18th NBA championship. This potential milestone has Celtics legend Bob Cousy eagerly anticipating the outcome.
During an interview with Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe, Cousy expressed his strong desire to see his former team clinch the championship.
“I’m 95 f*cking years old with one foot in the grave and I can barely move. I know I’m in overtime. So everything in your life becomes more meaningful. And one of the last things I want to be able to see is for the Celtics to hang up banner No. 18,” Cousy said.
The Celtics last tasted NBA Championship glory in 2008, with their formidable trio of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen leading the charge. Despite making several appearances in the Finals since then, capturing the elusive trophy has remained just out of reach for them.
However, with the ECF MVP Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, the Celtics appear poised to break their championship drought this year. If they manage to secure the title, it will be their 18th NBA championship, making them the most successful franchise in league history and surpassing their longtime rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.
Bob Cousy’s Storied NBA Career
Bob Cousy began his illustrious career with the Boston Celtics in 1950, becoming a pivotal figure during the team’s golden era. Under his leadership, the Celtics clinched their first championship in 1957. The former Celtics star remains revered, earning the league MVP title that season.
From 1957 to 1963, Cousy’s collaboration with Bill Russell turned the Celtics into a formidable dynasty. Together, they secured six championships—five in a row.
Before hanging up his jersey, Cousy set up his remark by leading the NBA in assists for eight consecutive years, from 1953 to 1960. His remarkable consistency also earned him a spot in thirteen straight NBA All-Star games.
