Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum was happy for teammate Jaylen Brown after he won the 2024 NBA Finals MVP award following a five-game defeat of the Dallas Mavericks.

“I feel like he has gotten a short end of the stick, whether it’s All-Star selections or All-NBA,” Tatum said in an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix. “I feel like he, in a sense, made up for some of those shortcomings that people didn’t vote him for. I was happy that he got it.”

While Brown has averaged over 20 points per game in each season since his 2019-20 campaign and also has seven years with a playoff appearance under his belt, he only has three All-Star nods in his career.

Brown also has one All-NBA appearance in his career, earning a spot on the second team in 2023. It made him eligible to receive a massive five-year extension worth $304 million in July 2023, which saw him become the highest-paid player in the league at the time he signed it.

While Brown’s scoring volume decreased the following season with the additions of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis, he still improved his efficiency and was excellent on the defensive end of the floor.

In 70 contests, he averaged 23.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting a career-high 49.9 percent from the field. Brown also recorded 1.2 steals each night, tying his highest single-season average.

While Boston finished the regular season with the best record in the association at 64-18, Tatum was the only member of the Celtics to receive a spot on an All-NBA team. Brown finished with the most votes of any player to miss the three teams, sitting 20 points back of Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker for the final spot on the third team.

“We all felt like, internally, that he should have made one of the All NBA teams, so it was a shame to see that he didn’t,” Tatum told reporters on May 24.

However, Brown was eventually able to bring home some hardware by winning the Finals MVP award after averaging 20.8 points throughout five games against Dallas.
