With the MLB trade deadline hovering on July 30, Yankees manager Aaron Boone contemplates a significant lineup change. Boone is considering the possibility of benching veteran player DJ LeMahieu, a decision underscored by General Manager Brian Cashman’s ambition to enhance the team’s roster, specifically targeting a potent infield hitter.
Decline in Performance Spurs Roster Reevaluation
Once celebrated as a top tier contact hitter in the league, DJ LeMahieu’s performance has notably dropped in the past seasons. Presently, he holds a batting average of just .177, coupled with an on-base percentage of .270 and a slugging percentage of .202.
This season, across 39 games and 142 plate appearances, LeMahieu has failed to hit a home run and has driven in only 11 runs. His weighted runs created plus (wRC+) reveals a below-par score of 44, performing 56% below the league’s average.
For the first time, his wins above replacement (WAR) reflects a negative value at -0.2.
Analyzing his hitting metrics, LeMahieu’s hard-hit rate is at 35.9%, with a noticeable drop in his average exit velocity to 87.6 mph. His launch angle also sits in the negatives, at -0.8°, indicating struggles in generating lift, which could enhance his chances for extra-base hits.
Defensive Competence Contrasted by Offensive Struggles
Despite the decrease in his offensive prowess, LeMahieu’s defensive capabilities continue to shine. Playing primarily at third base this year, he holds a .989 fielding percentage and has registered five outs above average across 275.2 innings. However, even his solid defense might not be sufficient to secure his starting position, particularly as potential trades brew, notably around Isaac Paredes from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Calls for Fresh Talent Emerge Amidst a Lone Bright Spot
LeMahieu’s performance with runners in scoring position — batting .276 with 11 RBIs from 29 at-bats — remains impressive. Still, voices within the organization and fanbase alike champion for younger talents like Oswaldo Cabrera, who, although also below average with a 79 wRC+, shows budding potential with .237 average, .286 OBP, five home runs, and 27 RBIs. Unlike LeMahieu, Cabrera has a better inclination for hitting the ball in the air, potentially reducing his rate of groundouts.
Crucial Decision Ahead for the Yankees
Following a 9-1 defeat to the Rays, where LeMahieu underperformed, the Yankees face a pivotal decision. They must determine whether to persist with LeMahieu’s veteran influence or shift towards youthful, dynamic alternatives that could invigorate the team’s lineup as they aspire for postseason success. The upcoming days leading to the trade deadline will be crucial in shaping the Yankees’ strategy and roster dynamics.
