Mandatory minicamp has ended, and the Dallas Cowboys have yet to sign any of their three franchise cornerstone players — quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons — to new deals.
Dak Prescott is entering the last season of a $160 million pact he signed in the 2021 offseason. CeeDee Lamb has one year remaining on his rookie deal, and Micah Parsons is eligible for an extension after completing three seasons on his rookie contract.
During Friday’s edition of “SportsCenter”, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that the Cowboys’ main “priority” is extending Prescott over both Lamb and Parsons:
“You’ve got Dak Prescott. The Cowboys have a world of problems here financially with three players they have to sign—Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb as well—but the feeling around the league and sources I’ve talked to is that they want to start with Dak. They’ve put it on the table with Dak’s people that ‘Hey look, you’re a priority. We want to try to get something done.’ As far as hard dollars, not a lot of progress yet. I would describe their efforts so far as passive.”
Prescott is coming off the best statistical season of his career in which he completed 410 passes (the most in football) for 4,516 passing yards and a league-leading 36 touchdowns against only nine interceptions.
But the Cowboys endured yet another disappointing postseason exit, getting crushed by the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers 48-32 on Super Wild Card Weekend. Prescott had two interceptions (including a pick-six) and took four sacks in that game.
Many wondered if Jerry Jones would make big changes following the playoff letdown. But he retained head coach Mike McCarthy and appears keen on committing to Dak Prescott as Dallas looks to reach the NFC title game for the first time since 1995.
The Cowboys would ideally get an extension done with Lamb as well before the start of the season. An extension with Parsons would also be nice, but it’s not as urgent with two years left on the deal.
Dak Prescott & Cowboys Open Season In Cleveland
Prescott and the Cowboys will be challenged early when they visit another 2023 playoff team, the Cleveland Browns, to kick off their season on Sept. 8.
Not only will it feature a showdown between two of football’s top teams, but it’s also Tom Brady’s debut as an analyst for the “NFL on FOX.” Brady will be on the call with Kevin Burkhardt and Erin Andrews for that game.
