Tonight the Edmonton Oilers continue to be active with another time this time sending Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks.

The Edmonton Oilers have been on fire in the NHL news over the last week. First Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway were sent offer sheets as restricted free agents by the St. Louis Blues. Then earlier today the team traded for Vasily Podkolzin. Now the Oilers have traded away veteran defenseman Cody Ceci in exchange for Ty Emberson and a 2025 third-round pick.

In this deal the Edmonton Oilers send away Cody Ceci who is a 30 year old defenseman who can play a lot of minutes. Originally thought to be an offensive leaning powerplay specialist coming out of the Ottawa 67’s of the OHL in 2012 Cody Ceci has settled in more as just a solid all around defender in recent years.

The Edmonton Oilers come out of this deal with 24 year old Ty Emberson who played 30 NHL games last season for the San Jose Sharks. He is an interesting case a third round pick in 2018 Ty Emberson had his stock rise as a defense first defenseman at the University of Wisconsin. Since turning pro Ty Emberson continues to lean on his defensive strengths and penalty killing. These skills will need to stay sharp if Ty Emberson is going to stay in the NHL.

The move once again seems to be a set-up move to clear space. This could allow the Edmonton Oilers to potentially match at least one if not both of Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway’s offer sheets. Both players are still awaiting their fate. Recent moves from today including the acquisition of Vasily Podkolzin have clouded what the Edmonton Oilers intend to do.

As more information on this developing situation comes out we will continue to update you.
