San Antonio Spurs Could Target Hustle Player in Free Agency

The San Antonio Spurs could sign Naji Marshall in free agency.

The San Antonio Spurs are looking to add talent wherever they can get it. After adding defensive-minded guard Stephon Castle in the NBA Draft to pair with Victor Wembanyama, it is clear that the Spurs are pursuing a defensive mindset.

In the upcoming season, it is expected that the Spurs will trot out a starting lineup featuring Castle, Wembanyama, Jeremy Sochan, and Devin Vassell. Those players range from plus-defenders to favorites to win multiple Defensive Players of the Year. It’s safe to say that the Spurs’ starting five will have their opponents in a torture chamber.

If the Spurs can swing a trade for Trae Young or another volume scorer, all of their needs will be addressed in the starting five. However, their bench unit, currently led by Tre Jones, Keldon Johnson, and Zach Collins, could use some veteran help and added defensive prowess.

Enter free agent Naji Marshall from the New Orleans Pelicans. A 6-7 wing, he has proven that he can do a little bit of everything. He is 26 years old and fits in well with the Spurs’ timeline, and would bolster the second unit.

Marshall averaged 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.9 “stocks” off the bench for New Orleans last season. He is expected to sign elsewhere this summer.

He shot a career-high 38.7 percent from deep last season for the Pelicans, and if he could match that success next season he would be an excellent addition to the Spurs and would provide some much-needed wing depth. As the Spurs eye possible free-agent targets, Marshall would not turn them into contenders, but he would significantly raise their floor, provided he could maintain his efficiency.

It’s worth noting that in his first three seasons in the league, he shot only 28.6 percent from deep, so there are some question marks there, but he is the type of hustle player who the Spurs could turn into a stud.
