Today reports are coming in from several sources confirming that the Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Reilly Smith to the New York Rangers.

Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that draft pick compensation will be the return for Reilly Smith heading to New York.

Further reports believe the draft pick coming back will be a 2027 second-round pick and a 5th round pick.

Reilly Smith was expected to be a key support piece to the contending team in Pittsburgh. Despite that situation not working out the New York Rangers will likely use him in a similar middle-six role. The Penguins now clear significant salary cap space to use elsewhere in improving their roster.
