The New Orleans Pelicans have experienced a notable offseason, marked by the acquisition of standout guard Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks. Murray’s addition bolsters the team with enhanced scoring, defense, and playmaking abilities.
However, the anticipated major trade of star forward Brandon Ingram has not yet materialized, though it remains a strong possibility before the 2024-25 NBA season kicks off.
Amidst these developments, there’s been speculation about another potential big move. Chris Kirsch of GiveMeSport raised eyebrows by suggesting the Pelicans might consider trading Zion Williamson, although he also acknowledged that such a move is improbable. Kirsch noted, “Those caveats indicate that Williamson is most likely not being moved anytime soon. But there are teams out there that have the capital to trade for him and will gladly do so, and if the Pelicans’ financial situation becomes direamasoneggoh, they may be inclined to pull the trigger.”
While the idea of trading Williamson seemed unexpected, it’s important to note his challenges with maintaining fitness, which have been a source of frustration for the team. Despite these issues, Williamson, as the franchise face, played 70 games last season, posting averages of 22.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, with a shooting accuracy of 57 percent from the field.
At only 24 years old and with significant potential, it’s highly unlikely the Pelicans would consider trading Williamson anytime soon. The hope is that he will demonstrate his full capabilities in the upcoming season.
As trade rumors continue swirling, expect New Orleans to feature prominently in discussions, particularly regarding Ingram, though a move involving Williamson appears off the table for this offseason.
