At the recent SEC Media Days, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko delved into multiple subjects regarding the team’s prospects and the challenges they anticipate in the upcoming season, demonstrating his depth of preparation and insight into his players and their capabilities.
Elko opened by discussing the highly anticipated season opener on August 31 against Notre Dame, an opponent he is deeply familiar with due to his past as their defensive coordinator in 2017. He highlighted that such a challenging game right at the start effectively sharpens the team’s focus from the outset. Elko expressed that these high-stakes games bring a necessary urgency which is beneficial in long training camps, helping in refocusing the players by reminding them of the significant challenges ahead.
The conversation then turned towards his former quarterback at Duke, Riley Leonard. Elko shared a humorous note about devising scripted answers regarding facing Leonard, underscoring his respect and admiration for Leonard’s skills and competitive nature.
Moreover, Elko shared his excitement about experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of Kyle Field from the sidelines for the first time, labeling it as potentially a special experience, given his previous experiences were from the press box.
Elko was accompanied by three Texas A&M players at the Media Days, each with a unique connection to him. Junior offensive lineman Trey Zuhn, sophomore linebacker Taurean York, and junior defensive lineman Shemar Turner were highlighted by Elko not only for their athletic prowess but also their academic achievements and leadership qualities.
Focusing on the Quarterback situation, Elko discussed Connor Weigman’s journey through injury and his subsequent recovery. Elko stressed the importance of day-to-day growth and consistency in Weigman’s approach to the game, which will be vital for the team’s success.
Elko also praised defensive lineman Shemar Turner, who gained significant weight during the offseason, enhancing his flexibility and play, crucial for his role transition from defensive end to defensive tackle. Elko emphasized Turner’s intentional approach to improving his game and preparing for a professional future with versatility.
Addressing the team rebuild, Elko conveyed the urgency required in the modern era of college football, emphasizing the swift adaptation without losing focus on establishing a strong team culture and identity. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made in his first seven months at the helm.
Elko also discussed the offensive line improvements and strategic adjustments to protect the quarterback better and enhance team success. He acknowledged the need to evolve the wide receiver unit to replace notable players like Ainias Smith and Evan Stewart, ensuring a broad set of threats for the opposing defenses.
Highlighting newcomer five-star prospect Terry Bussey, Elko pointed out Bussey’s exceptional athleticism and potential versatility in contributing both in defensive and special teams roles.
Lastly, Elko welcomed new offensive coordinator Collin Klein, praising his innovative approach and understanding of attacking different defenses effectively. Elko appears enthusiastic about the upcoming season, stressing a solid strategic foundation and collective team growth.
Through his discourse, Elko painted a picture of a program ready to tackle its challenges head-on, with a clear focus on harnessing and developing its talent to achieve optimal performance levels this season.
