NEW YORK — It seemed that only Mother Nature could put a stop to the New York Mets’ charge, as severe thunderstorms caused an abrupt halt to the game, leaving them in the lead.

The Mets were ahead 4-0 against the Yankees in what was the second game of the Subway Series, taking place at Citi Field. The game was called off in the bottom of the fifth inning due to the adverse weather conditions. With the Mets in the lead at that point, the game was deemed official.

A pivotal third inning saw the Mets pull ahead, capitalizing on a performance from Yankees’ pitcher Luis Gil. Francisco Lindor’s second double of the game, sent to right field, along with Brandon Nimmo’s walk, set the stage.

J.D. Martinez then contributed with an RBI single, marking the start of the Mets’ scoring spree.

The inning’s momentum didn’t end there. Following Pete Alonso’s ground into a double play, Francisco Alvarez connected with a soaring fastball for a two-run homer over the right-center field bullpen, pushing the Mets forward 3-0.

Alvarez wasn’t finished, however. In the fifth inning, after Gil had been replaced due to issuing a pair of walks, the Mets’ catcher smashed an RBI double against the right-field wall, further extending their lead.

Sean Manaea, pitching for the Mets, demonstrated resilience over three innings. Despite a shaky start where he loaded the bases in the first inning with a single out, he managed to initiate an inning-ending double play off Alex Verdugo. Manaea continued to rely on his defense, inducing double plays in the second and fourth innings from Jose Trevino and Verdugo, respectively, after facing leadoff baserunners.
