The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be done with Ilya Samsonov as all indications point to the goaltender leaving the team in free agency.
This will not come as a surprise to most Leafs fans. Samsonov was wildly inconsistent during his tenure with the Leafs, so the team never knew what version of him they were going to get on a nightly basis. Perhaps more importantly, he performed significantly worse than Joseph Woll in the playoffs this year. Now new reports have confirmed that the Leafs and Samsonov will be parting ways this summer.
“The Leafs have moved on from goalie Ilya Samsonov, who is looking for a long-term deal.” -Kevin McGran
With Samsonov out of the picture, all eyes are on Joseph Woll. The 25-year-old netminder got into 25 games this season where he put up solid, but not great numbers. A .907 save percentage was just over league average and his 2.97 goals-against-average was equally mediocre. That being said, many Leafs fans have full confidence in his ability to take over as the starting netminder next season.
He should be designated #1 next season. Give him a chance. Leafs won’t be contenders for another 3-4 years.
💯 confident
He’ll be back bigger and stronger for the start of next season.
Stand by this kid cuz he will be a stud in the NHL
Still though, the Leafs will certainly be in the market for a new netminder this summer. It seems that the most logical move would be to bring in a veteran netminder who can handle a starter’s work load if necessary, that way the team can ease Woll into the starter’s role.
Cam Talbot and Laurent Brossoit highlight a relatively weak class of free agent goaltenders this summer. Both have been suggested as good fits for the Leafs. Needless to say, Brad Treliving has his work cut out for him this summer.
Stay in the loop to see what moves he makes, and specifically what goalie he brings in to mentor Joseph Woll.
