Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell took a shot at Justin Fields, who’s entering his first year with the AFC North club.
Justin Fields was acquired by the Steelers in a March trade with the Chicago Bears. In return, the Steelers sent a conditional 2025 sixth-round draft pick that could be upgraded to a fourth-round pick depending on his playing time.
A viral video surfaced of Fields throwing to trainer James Everett Jr., who works with several NFL stars. Responding to the video, Le’Veon Ball criticized Fields’ throw and stated, “this is telling you a lot”:
Bell responded to a fan who called Justin Fields trash and said there’s plenty of room to improve, noting it could “be scary with all the talent he has.”
Bell played for the Steelers from 2013 to 2017, leading them to four postseason appearances, three AFC North division crowns and a tip to the 2016 AFC Championship Game.
The Steelers acquired Fields soon after they signed Russell Wilson, who was released by the Denver Broncos after two seasons. As Denver is paying Wilson $85 million in dead money over the next two years, Pittsburgh got Wilson on a cheap one-year deal worth the veteran’s minimum.
Head coach Mike Tomlin stated that Wilson was the starting QB following the trade for Fields. On Thursday, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reported that Fields has not made it “a competition” with Wilson, who’s seeing most of the reps.
In his final season with the Bears, Justin Fields completed 61.4 percent of pass attempts for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions to go along with 657 rushing yards and four rushing scores.
Justin Fields Needed A Fresh Start
The Bears didn’t exactly put Fields in the best position to succeed until they got a true No. 1 WR in DJ Moore. Sure enough, Fields put together the best statistical season of his young career in 2023.
Chicago was always committed to taking Caleb Williams with the first overall pick of 2024, so it only made sense to give Fields a fresh start. Even if he doesn’t see much playing time in Pittsburgh, Fields at least benefits from the luxury of learning from two future Hall of Famers in Wilson and Tomlin.
