Former San Antonio Spurs forward shared a questionable take regarding Victor Wembanyama.

Richard Jefferson has a knack for making statements that make you scratch your head or wave your finger as a signal for catching onto a troll. Jefferson, a former San Antonio Spurs forward, interviewed Tim Duncan, which inspired dry humor moments fitting of both men. However, Jefferson’s recent interview with Oklahoma City Thunder Chet Holmgren caused a stir.

“If you [Chet Holmgren] would have been on the San Antonio Spurs. The numbers you would have put up would have been equally as ridiculous [as Victor Wembanyama’s],” Jefferson boldly claimed.

Firstly, the Thunder drafted Holmgren in 2022, but by the letter of the law, he’s a rookie. Although he didn’t play in the 2022-23 season, Holmgren was able to soak up the Thunder’s game plan and overall team energy, whereas Wembanyama didn’t get such an opportunity with the Spurs.

Instead, Wembanyama walked into one of the worst teams in the NBA without All-Star talent and without a semblance of a starting point guard. Wembanyama, being the ultimate professional, made the most of it and had NBA analysts ready to vote for him as the Defensive Player of the Year despite the Spurs’ 22nd-ranked defensive rating.

Returning to Holmgren’s unique situation, he’s playing with a team loaded with talent, most notably Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the 2024 MVP runner-up — hardly a problem that hinders a center’s numbers. While Holmgren had an outstanding rookie season and made the race for Rookie of the Year close for a certain period in the 2023-24 season, no one ever dared say Holmgren was the better player.

If Wembanyama was on the Thunder, alongside Gilgeous-Alexander and an elite defense, it’s safe to say he would have won DPOY and possibly an All-Team nod.
