Chris Paul Hurts 3-Time All-Star’s Odds To Join San Antonio Spurs

It did not take long before Chris Paul found a new landing spot in the NBA. After getting released by the Golden State Warriors, Paul agreed to a one-year deal worth more than $11 million with the San Antonio Spurs.

That news understandably excites many Spurs fans because Paul can still bring a lot to the table, but that also likely means that a potential San Antonio trade for Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young isn’t going to happen anymore—at least in this offseason.

Chris Paul to the Spurs likely rules out San Antonio as a Trae Young destination for now. At CP3’s age he’s a placeholder before the next wave of available PGs: Still Trae? Or Fox? Or maybe Stephon Castle blossoms. There’s also a star French PG in the 2025 draft: Nolan Traore.

Crazier things have happened in the NBA, so there could still be rumors flying around about Young’s chances of getting sent to the Spurs. That being said, the safer bet at the moment is on Young opening the 2024–25 NBA season wearing Hawks threads.

The Hawks have control of Young at least until the end of the 2025–26 season, with Young possessing a player option for the 2026–27 campaign.
