Angela Price, the wife of Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, has gotten into a controversy after comments made on social media in regards to the 2024 summer Olympics.

On her Instagram, Price responded to a question had about Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who has been at the center of criticism over unverified questions over her gender identity. Price went on to bash Khelif, mocking her with a photoshopped photo of boxer Mike Tyson in a wig, an apparent reference to questions over Khelif’s gender.

Price gave a response to a question over Khelif.

«That saying ‘common sense isn’t very common these days’….a woman will never be able to compete at the same level as a man and I think it is heart breaking for these women born athletes, heartbreaking! do you, dress and act however you like but there are limits.»

Questions emerged on social media about Khelif’s fairness in the sport following a claim from the International Boxing Association, a Russian boxing federation, that Khelif failed a gender eligibility test in 2023, leading to unsorted allegations that Khelif was male.

A win against Italian boxer Angela Carini in just 46 seconds further fueled social media outrage, including from Elon Musk & United States Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance.

Khelif, who identifies as female and has not publicly stated to be biologically male, called the IBA’s claims an “injustice”. Algeria, where Khelif is from, has strict laws against LGBT+ rights, including in regards to gender identity and transitioning.

The IOC has affirmed their support of Khelif against criticisms over her eligibility, noting her previous competing in the 2020 Olympics in which she didn’t medal, and the refusal of the IBA to release their findings on Khelif’s tests. The IOC says Khelif, and fellow questioned boxer, Lin Yu-ting, met the eligibility to compete.

Khelif has since defeated Hungarian boxer Anna Luca Hamori to advance to the medal round of the Olympics women’s welterweight competition.
