The San Antonio Spurs are on the market to add a point guard to run the offense with and through Victor Wembanyama, although they won’t pass up talent at other positions.

One of the best defenders in the NBA, OG Anunoby, can opt into a $19.9 million contract extension for the 2024-25 season with the New York Knicks, although ESPN’s Brian Windhorst seems to think he wants to test the waters of NBA free agency.

“Most people believe Anunoby will stay with New York, but there have been indications he may want to test the market because he’s not thrilled with what the Knicks are offering,” reported Windhorst on Monday.

If Anunoby does opt out and explore free agency, expect suitors around the league to line up to offer him a new contract. The Spurs could cut Charles Bassey and Devonte Graham and offer Anunoby roughly $100 million over four years, although that might not be enough.

In an article listing the best possible landing spots for Anunoby, GIVEMESPORT’s Svyatoslav Rovenchuk posited that the Spurs could trade some of their draft picks and salary filler to a league bottom-feeder to create extra cap space for Anunoby.

Anunoby is one of the league’s best defenders, and if the Spurs go all-in on defense by somehow signing Anunoby and pairing him with Wembanyama, Sochan, Vassell, and either Devin Carter or Stephon Castle in the NBA Draft, they will have one of the best defensive lineups in the NBA, with their oldest starter only 27 years old.

Anunoby averaged 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and shot 39.4 percent for the Knicks in 23 regular-season games.
