Hollywood icon Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88.
The veteran Canadian actor’s death from a long illness was announced by his movie star son Kiefer Sutherland Thursday.
He died in Miami, according to his talent agency CAA.
Sutherland’s career spanned over 60 years. He saw a resurgence in popularity with a younger audience in recent years thanks to his role as the evil President Snow in The Hunger Games franchise.
The Emmy and Golden Globe winner made a name for himself long before that, appearing on M*A*S*H, Klute and the 1970s horror movie Don’t Look Now.

Before transitioning into a long career as a respected character actor, Sutherland epitomized the unpredictable, anti-establishment cinema of the 1970s.
The tall and gaunt actor with a grin that could be sweet or diabolical was also known as the hippie tank commander in Kelly’s Heroes and the stoned professor in Animal House.
Over the decades, Sutherland showed his range in more buttoned-down — but still eccentric — parts in Robert Redford’s Ordinary People and Oliver Stone’s JFK.
In 2022, he appeared on what would be his last projects, Lawmen: Bass Reeves and Swimming With Sharks.
Sutherland was set to star in upcoming apocalyptic flick Heart Land, which is in pre-production.

Sutherland won an Emmy in 1995 for his role on Citizen X, and was nominated in 2006 for Human Trafficking, as reported by Variety.
The actor also won a Golden Globe for the miniseries Citizen X and for the television movie Path to War.
In 2017 he received an Honorary Award from the Academy.

Sutherland’s breakout role came in the 1970’s comedy smash hit M*A*S*H, which turned him into a major Hollywood star.
The actor starred alongside Jane Fonda in 1971’s Klute, his first role as a romantic lead.
Fonda won the Oscar for best actress for her work on the film, and credited Sutherland for her award.
The two had been in a romantic relationship while filming, and he became involved in antiwar activism at the time.

Sutherland also leaves behind four grandchildren.
After Kiefer led tributes in announcing his father’s passing, a number of big names honored his timeless career.
Broadcaster Piers Morgan said he was ‘one of my all-time favorite actors who played so many great roles. What a sad loss.’
Director Ron Howard, who worked with Sutherland on the film Backdraft, said he was ‘blessed’ to have directed the icon.
‘One of the most intelligent, interesting & engrossing film actors of all time. Incredible range, creative courage & dedication to serving the story & the audience with supreme excellence,’ he said.
British filmmaker Edgar Wright, known for hits including Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver, praised Sutherland as a ‘fascinating screen presence.’
‘A funny, laconic, but also intense and dramatic presence in so many memorable movies,’ he said on X.
‘So sorry to see you go Donald, but what a legacy you leave behind.’
House of the Dragon star James Dreyfus added that Sutherland was a ‘staple in my life through incredible performances.’
‘Quirky, versatile, always honest & brilliant. Wonderful.’
