Iron Man star and one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, Robert Downey Jr., adores the no-nonsense action antics of Olympus Has Fallen, according to star Gerard Butler.

While discussing his new movie, Plane, with Total Film, Butler revealed that Downey Jr. contacted him personally after viewing the 2013 action thriller, pleading for him to continue flying the flag for old-school action flicks.
“Robert Downey Jr. wrote me the nicest email after Olympus Has Fallen. This is the same vibe. He’s like, ‘We need more of these movies.’ These are the movies when I was in New York as a kid, and people would shout at the screen and throw things and be like, ‘No!,’ and applaud and cheer.”
Led by Butler as Secret Service agent and former Army Ranger Mike Banning, Olympus Has Fallen is one of the best modern-day examples of an 80s action movie call-back.

Full to bursting with gunfire, explosions, and faceless henchmen for Butler to dispatch, Downey Jr. certainly got his wish, with Olympus Has Fallen spawning two sequels in London Has and Angel Has Fallen, with another outing, Night Has Fallen, currently in development.

Learning that Tony Stark himself is a big fan of his action output must have been a thrill for Butler, who recently declared that he wants to be known as the “Tom Hanks of action movies.” More words that should hit the ears of Robert Downey Jr. like music.

Robert Downey Jr. Will No Doubt Be First in Line for Plane

Plane movie with Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler will once again demonstrate his penchant for action movie escapades in Plane, which is due for release this Friday. And no doubt Robert Downey Jr. will be first in line.

Plane follows Butler as pilot Brodie Torrance who, after saving his passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island, quickly finds out that surviving the landing was just the beginning.

When most of the passengers are taken hostage by dangerous rebels, the only person Torrance can count on for help is Louis Gaspare, an accused murderer who was being transported by the FBI. In order to rescue the passengers, Torrance will need Gaspare’s help, and will learn there’s more to Gaspare than meets the eye.

According to Butler, Plane brings the same crowd-pleasing action thrills as Olympus Has Fallen. Something which Downey Jr. will be happy to hear.
“I think that’s what this movie is. It’s a throwback to that, where literally you’re in the energy of the group, and everybody’s either terrified or cheering you on.”

Directed by Jean-François Richet and written by Charles Cumming and J. P. Davis, Plane stars Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World Dominion), Yoson An (Mulan), Remi Adeleke (Transformers: The Last Knight), Haleigh Hekking (Action Royale), Lilly Krug (Every Breath You Take), Joey Slotnick (The Blacklist), Oliver Trevena (While We Sleep), and newcomer Kelly Gale alongside Butler.
