Alan Ritchson will take the field again in a sequel show to Blue Mountain State, his popular raunchy sports comedy from 2010 and 2011.
SUMMARY
Alan Ritchson is developing a sequel to Blue Mountain State , with negotiations ongoing for the original series leads to reprise their roles.
Despite the actors aging, Ritchson’s growing fame could lead the sequel to success.
The timing for a Blue Mountain State sequel may be odd, but with Ritchson’s success in Reacher and movie roles, now could be the perfect time.
Alan Ritchson is developing a sequel to his show Blue Mountain State. The raunchy sports comedy show surrounded the lives of three college freshmen football players as they navigate a college life filled with football, girls, classes, and shenanigans. Also starring Darin Brooks, Sam Jones III and The Meg‘s Page Kennedy, the show originally ran for three seasons from 2010–11.
According to Deadline, a sequel is now being developed for Blue Mountain State. Ritchson will reprise his role in the show, which has not fully landed yet as negotiations are ongoing. Original series leads Brooks and Chris Romano, who co-created the original cult classic, are also expected to reappear in the sequel show, though the extent of their involvement currently remains unknown.
Why Now is the Right Time for a Blue Mountain State Sequel
In some ways, developing a sequel to Blue Mountain State in 2024 is odd timing. When the series began, Ritchson, Brooks, and Romano were 28, 26, and 32 years old, respectively.
Even then, they were slightly too old to play college students, but the show hinged on their college days. All in their late 30s and 40s now, a Blue Mountain State follow-up would have to take on a vastly different setting.
That said, now might be the perfect time for a Blue Mountain State sequel because of one major factor, that being Ritchson. While Brooks and Romano remain best known for the football show for the most part, Ritchson’s fame has only grown since starring in Blue Mountain State.
Most notably, Ritchson plays the lead role in the Prime Video show Reacher, which has been incredibly successful for Amazon. Ritchson has also made a foray into a number of movie roles, including this year’s Ordinary Angels and the upcoming The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
So, even with the actors being older, Ritchson’s growing fame could lead the Blue Mountain State sequel to success. Blue Mountain State did get a follow-up film in 2016, called Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland.
That movie saw Ritchson’s titular character and his crew move beyond college, so the show does have a blueprint at what post-collegiate life could look like for the main characters. Hopefully, Ritchson and the team can pull it off again for the Blue Mountain State sequel show.
