A fan-made collage of actor Nicolas Cage throughout the years includes a clever and funny 1990s twist paying homage to an action classic.
SUMMARY
Nicolas Cage’s collage pays homage to his ’90s action movies, with a clever twist featuring John Travolta from the film Face/Off.
Face/Off, released in 1997 and directed by John Woo, was a hit with rave reviews and a box office gross of $245 million.
Paramount has reportedly been developing a sequel to Face/Off, but there has been little progress in getting it off the ground, leaving fans in limbo.
A collage of Nicolas Cage throughout the years includes a clever 1990s twist paying homage to an action classic. Having early on established himself as a fascinating performer through roles in everything from Moonstruck to Raising Arizona to his Oscar-winning performance in Leaving Las Vegas, Cage in the 1990s became a true action star thanks to blockbusters like The Rock and Con Air.
Still prolific in 2023, the ever-raging actor just released the new comedy The Retirement Plan, in which he plays a retired beach bum with a mysterious past. He’s also set to star in Dream Scenario, a surreal film from independent production company A24.
With Cage still churning out explosive performances after decades in the business, Instagram creator beardohweirdoh has paid tribute with a collage that features a funny twist in homage to one of the star’s biggest ‘90s action movies. Check out the posting in the space below:
The joke of course is that Cage’s picture in the middle of the collage is replaced with that of John Travolta, his co-star in the John Woo-directed face-swapping movie Face/Off.
Face/Off 2 Is Reportedly Happening
Released in 1997, Face/Off completed the Cage action trifecta begun with The Rock and continued with Con Air. As crazy as those two movies are, they don’t compare to the madness unleashed in Hong Kong legend Woo’s over-the-top thriller, as Cage’s bad guy Castor Troy has his face switched with that of Travolta’s FBI agent Sean Archer.
Allowing both actors ample opportunity to crank things to 11, Woo’s film was a huge hit, grossing $245 million, while garnering rave reviews from critics, as reflected in its current 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Though it’s been nearly 30 years since the first movie came out, Paramount was as of 2021 reportedly actively developing Face/Off 2, with Adam Wingard hired to take on directorial duties. Cage himself is eager to return for the sequel, even talking up a potential story in an interview with Collider from back in January. Unfortunately, the star also indicated that there’s been very little progress in getting the sequel off the ground:
I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability. It’s almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess, and then it’s not just the two, John Travolta and myself, it’s four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex. I think there’s a lot of fertile ground there. I had maybe one meeting in an office, but I haven’t heard anything since, so I don’t know.
Hopefully there will soon be an update on a potential sequel to one of Cage’s wildest action movies, though with the ongoing strikes, everything is currently in a disappointing state of limbo.
