Tom Cruise has made a name for performing his stunts, no matter how risky. From jumping off Burj Khalifa to hanging from a flying plane and being involved in a helicopter chase scene, Cruise has shown some of the most iconic sequences in the Mission Impossible films.
These stunts often make fans wonder how he gathers so much courage to perform them. However, Tom Cruise confessed that he is also a human being like us and gets scared by the stunts.
Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise
It is undoubtedly tough to believe that even the Top Gun actor gets terrified of these action set-pieces. The finesse and perfection with which Ethan Hunt performs these stunts make the Mission Impossible franchise a visual spectacle and feature Cruise as a real-life superhero.
But no matter how we take those scenes, Tom Cruise admitted that he also gets terrified of some stunts.
When was Tom Cruise terrified while performing a stunt?
The bike stunt in Mission Impossible 7
In the latest Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning, we saw Agent Ethan Hunt jumping off a cliff on a motorcycle. The stunt was one of the primary attractions of the film. When it was revealed that Tom Cruise had maintained his tradition and performed this dangerous set piece on his own, the fans were dumbfounded.
Even though the fans considered him a living superhero, the star was clear that he also had his fears. While talking to CNN, the Ethan Hunt fame revealed that he also feels fear. However, what makes him different from us is his courage to confront it.
“It’s not like I’m not scared. I don’t mind being scared. I want to confront it.”
While Tom Cruise performs his stunt gracefully, it gets difficult for director Christopher McQuarrie to monitor the whole thing. He revealed that he goes through a lot while looking at the screen and praying for Cruise’s safety. For the motorcycle sequence in Dead Reckoning, Cruise jumped off the cliff six times to capture the scene from different angles.
“I was just staring at the crosshairs on the screen, and I was waiting to see blue – blue was the color of his parachute. Once I saw blue, I was just making sure it was a square, because if it wasn’t a square, it meant there was a malfunction. There was no coming back from it.”
However, no matter how intense the filming process gets for McQuarrie, finishing a Mission Impossible flick always gives him immense joy to think that everybody is safe at the end. Hopefully, we will witness another epic sequence in the upcoming sequel to Dead Reckoning- Part One.
Which Mission Impossible scene freaked out Tom Cruise’s late mother?
The plane stunt in Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation
We have seen some of the most iconic and breathtaking moments in the Mission Impossible franchise till now. Be it the jump from Burj Khalifa in Ghost Protocol or the Helicopter chase in Fallout. However, Tom Cruise’s late mother was shocked when he saw Cruise hanging from a flying airplane in Rogue Nation.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Jerry Maguire actor admitted that his mother was terrified to watch his breathtaking sequence in Rogue Nation.
“I showed her when I was on the A400, the side of the airplane in Rogue Nation, and she was like, ‘Honey, is that you on the side of that airplane?’ I said, ‘Yes ma’am,’ and she goes ‘Oh lordy, I’m so glad you didn’t tell me about that one.’”
After Cruise was spotted in his most dangerous stunt yet in Mission Impossible 7, the fans are more than eager to find out what are the makers planning for Mission Impossible 8.
The effect of Barbenheimer was seen in the box office figures of Dead Reckoning- Part One. It makes it essential for the upcoming film to feature something more spectacular to attract more audiences.
