Gerard Butler has had an eclectic career, and over time he has fallen into some truly memorable roles, as well as completely forgettable ones.
Scottish actor Gerard Butler has recently been nicknamed the “King Of B-Movies.” But in as much as he does plenty of B-movies, he’s had plenty of blockbusters in his career too.
Just like director Michael Bay, critics haven’t always been kind to Butler. Most of his films get poor reviews but audiences tend to like them.
Butler, who started out as a lawyer admitted that he initially got into the movie business because he wanted to be famous. He told the Telegraph, “When I started out, I’m not sure I was actually in it for the right reasons. I wanted very much to be famous.” And famous he has always been. Here are his most impressive roles, and his worst ones.
Impressive: Clyde Alexander Shelton in Law Abiding Citizen
In 2009, Law Abiding Citizen starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film. Never has there been a more deserving movie to win this award. Sadly, it lost to Inglourious Basterds.
Law Abiding Citizen was packed with thrills and twists that can only be compared to TV shows like 24. In the movie, Butler plays. Clyde Alexander Shelton. He is a convicted criminal who despite being locked up, still manages to terrorize and murder those in the outside world that he feels were indirectly responsible for his wife and child’s death. Jamie Foxx plays the assistant District Attorney Nick Rice.
Forgettable: Set In Gods Of Egypt
In Gods Of Egypt, Butler is Set the “God Of Darkness.” Set has taken over as ruler of the North-African nation of Egypt and pulled the once peaceful territory into a state of violence and instability.
A hero emerges in the name of Bek (Brenton Thwaites) He teams up with the god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)to fight Set and save his lover as well as the nation.
The film received all kinds of terrible reviews and backlash. There was also plenty of outrage when the Egyptian deities who are historically black were portrayed by white actors. Both Lionsgate and director Alex Proyas ended up apologizing for this.
Impressive: Leonidas King Of Sparta In 300
Putting Zack Snyder and Gerard Butler in the same movie might seem like a recipe for disaster today but several years ago, both were in top form. In what is considered his most popular role to date, Butler sweated blood when he starred as Leonidas, a Spartan king who refuses to bow down to the Persian Empire and leads an army of 300 men against King Xerxes.
300 was named IGN’s “Movie Of The Year” in 2009. It was also ranked 5th on the “5 Best Conservative Movies of the Last 25 Years” list by National Enquirer. The slick CGI style of direction used in 300, is said to have influenced plenty of other medieval-based productions like Spartacus as well as the superhero movies of the 2010s.
Forgettable: Andre Marek In Timeline
Timeline was a science fiction movie that neither audiences nor critics found appealing. it lost $49 million at the box office and only two out of dozens of renowned critics gave it a positive review. Butler’s character was also termed dull and misplaced. Surely, things don’t get worse than that.
Butler was far from his action comfort zone, playing an archeological site manager known as Andre Marek. In the movie, a couple of Yale students from Yale are studying a medieval site in France when suddenly, their professor goes missing. They then discover that a time machine has taken him to 14th century France.
Impressive: Agent Mike Banning In Olympus Has Fallen
Here’s another Gerard Butler that was lambasted by critics but connected well with audiences. In the movie, South Korean terrorists stage a well-coordinated attack on the White House.
When most members of the president’s security detail are taken out, Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Butler) is forced to be a one-man army and save the day.
The action sequences of the film were wildly praised and so was Antoine Fuqua’s direction. Butler also gave a standout performance, earning comparisons with popular action stars of the 80s and 90s like Arnold Schwarzenneger and Sylvester Stallone.
Forgettable: Milo Boyd In The Bounty Hunter
You can’t help but get the feeling that this movie could have been received better if it was a proper action film. However, it was more a comedy and it totally exposed Gerard Butler’s inability to be funny. Even Jennifer Aniston couldn’t cover up for him.
The movie follows bounty hunter Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler) who decides to track down his ex-wife, Nicole (Jennifer Aniston) for skipping bail. However, the job doesn’t end up being as easy as he expected. Nicole gives him a hard time because she knows him all too well.
Impressive: Big Nick In Den Of Thieves
In Den Of Thieves, a group of criminals discovers that every single day, $120 million is normally taken out of circulation and destroyed by the Los Angeles Branch of the Federal Reserve.
They thus decide to pull off a heist and get the money first. However, the ruthless Sheriff Nicholas “Big Nick” O’Brien (Gerard Butler) stands in their way.
Butler’s ability to switch between an emotional man whose marriage has fallen apart and a ruthless and sometimes corrupt cop is very impressive.
The low-budget film ended up performing above expectations, grossing $80 million worldwide. Though it falls short in some areas, critics praised it for being a good-enough heist film.
Forgettable: George Dryer In Playing For Keeps
it’s safe to say that Playing For Keeps was a disaster. With a 4% score on Rotten Tomatoes and less than $15 million a the box office, there was nothing good to write home about.
Director Gabriele Muccino shifted the blame to the movie’s 13 producers (what?) for each wanting their own vision to be implemented.
Butler starred as George Dryer, a former soccer star (Butler) who returns to his home town to get a new life and fix his strained relationship with his son.
He thus decides to coach his son’s soccer team. However, his new job doesn’t give him peace, especially when the moms who have their sons on the team decide he’s a perfect catch.
Impressive: Stoic In How To Train Your Dragon 2
It’s no surprise that this is Butler’s best-reviewed film. It has a score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. In the animated film, Butler voices a character named Stoic. The elderly Stoic is the chieftain of the Viking tribe of Berk and the father of the main character Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 grossed $618.9 million globally, becoming Butler’s best-performing movie. The movie was also praised for being appealing to both adults and children. it also received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.
Forgettable: Jacob “Jake” Lawson In Geostorm
For directors, disaster films aren’t that easy to make but for actors, it should be straightforward, right? Not really. Here, Butler proved just how hard it is to save the world and look cool while doing it.
Throughout the film, you can’t help but hope he just grabs a gun and “gets the hell out here” to go find some bad guys. Storms are too tough.
In Geostorm, Butler is Jacob “Jake” Lawson, a satellite designer (Gerard Butler)who finds himself in a race against time to prevent a catastrophe when earth’s climate control satellites stop working.
The movie goes hard with the tension and it is often promising but it never quite reaches the heights of other disaster movies.
