Many of 2023’s box office successes have prompted sequels. From John Wick to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, these franchises will return for more.

Mission Impossible John Wick and Spider Man Across the Spider Verse

SUMMARY

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse sequel confirmed, release date TBD.
John Wick 5 in development, with Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves potentially returning.
Mission: Impossible 8 release delayed, though plans have changed.

2023 was an eventful year at the box office, with many films doing well enough to earn themselves sequels. While some projects, like Mission: Impossible and Creed, were expected to continue from the start, other surprise hits have found sequels green-lit by studios. Low-budget movies like Plane and M3GAN snuck in to profit at the box office, meriting follow-ups.

Movies like The Super Mario Bros. MovieBarbie, and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves have had buzz surrounding sequel potential. However, until studios confirm something, they won’t count. Twelve movies from 2023 have had sequels confirmed to be in development, though when they arrive is mainly up to speculation. Given the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, projects have been stalled, and many 2023 sequels could have been affected.

12. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (TBD)

Given the cliffhanger ending to Across the Spider-Verse, a sequel to the beloved animated series is guaranteed. The next installment was initially set for a Summer 2024 release date, but the date was removed from the release calendar. In an interview with ComicBook.com, producers of the film spoke about the planned schedule, saying, “We won’t back into a release date that doesn’t fit.” While it may mean a longer wait, the added time will hopefully ensure that the third installment maintains the excellent quality of the series.

11. John Wick 5 (TBD)

A sequel to John Wick: Chapter 4

Despite the ending to John Wick: Chapter 4 suggesting that it might be over for the series and character, John Wick: Chapter 5 is being written. Prior to the announcement of part 5 being in the works, director Chad Stahelski has had mixed thoughts on returning for 5, saying, “Keanu and I are always interested in that, but we leave it hanging out there a little bit to figure out if we have something that we’d want to watch.” (via Inverse). Stahelski and Keanu Reeves’ return hasn’t been confirmed yet, though it’s hard to imagine continuing without them.

10. Mission: Impossible 8 (2025)

A sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1

Simon Pegg as Benji, Ving Rhames as Luther, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa and Tom Cruise as Ethan in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
Release Date: May 23, 2025

Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Cast: Tom Cruise , Pom Klementieff , Rebecca Ferguson , Vanessa Kirby , Hayley Atwell , Hannah Waddingham , Simon Pegg
Rating: PG-13

Like Across the Spider-Verse, the Mission: Impossible 8 release was initially planned for 2024. The film’s title was originally announced as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2, but Paramount revealed to have scrapped the title. Mission: Impossible 7 was excellent, but the movie underperformed at the box office due to fierce competition over the summer, possibly leading to plans changing behind the scenes.

9. Transformers 8 (TBD)

A sequel to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Paramount has already confirmed Transformers 8 & 9, which will follow up 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. While the movie didn’t achieve the box office numbers of Michael Bay’s first five films in the franchise, the IP has been profitable for the studio before, and they’ll continue investing in it. While no date is set for the next live-action release, Transformers fans have an animated movie called Transformers One to look forward to in 2024.

8. Creed 4 (TBD)

A sequel to Creed III

After the first two Creed films, Michael B. Jordan made his directorial debut in 2023 with Creed III. Given that the series is part of the larger Rocky franchise, it would be disappointing not to have a ridiculous number of sequels, and Creed IV has been confirmed. Once again, Michael B. Jordan is set to direct, and the fourth installment will have big shoes to fill after Jonathan Majors’s villain performance in Creed III.

7. Fast 11 (2025)

A sequel to Fast X

Release Date: April 4, 2025

Director: Louis Leterrier
Cast: Vin Diesel
Genres: Action , Adventure

The Fast & Furious film franchise continues to ride strong with Fast X, which raked in over $700 million at the box office in May. Fast 11, also titled Fast X Part 2, is set to continue an overarching story from the previous movie, with Jason Momoa continuing as the antagonist. Vin Diesel revealed the Fast 11 release date to be April 4, 2025. Though it’s possible the date could move, a 2025 release window seems highly likely.

6. TMNT 2 (TBD)

A sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

One of the quieter success stories of 2023 was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which rebooted the franchise with a creative new style. Paramount confirmed the next TMNT movie before the first was even released, and the film teased an upcoming villain in its post-credits scene. Though there’s no timeline for the next film’s release, Shredder will be TMNT: Mutant Mayhem 2’s main villain.

5. Scream 7 (2025)

A sequel to Scream VI

Jenna Ortega as Tara in Scream 6 with Ghostface hiding behind curtains

The previous two Scream films have successfully rebooted the ’90s franchise, with Scream 7 confirmed to be in production. However, the cast of Scream 7 has been shaken up by Jenna Ortega’s departure and Melissa Barreras’s controversial firing. The absence of two of the franchise’s youngest stars will certainly disrupt the movie’s progress, but as of right now, it’s slated for a 2025 release date.

4. M3GAN 2.0 (2025)

A sequel to M3GAN

Amie Donald (performer) and Jenna Davies (voice) as M3GAN looking sinisterly in M3GAN

M3GAN was a surprise hit in January 2023, grossing over $180 million on a budget of $12 million, marking another successful horror series for James Wan. M3GAN 2.0 has been confirmed, which is perfect given the ending of the first one, which saw M3GAN uploaded into a house, revealing that she’s still alive. The sequel is planned for a January 17, 2025, release date, meaning it will arrive just over two years after the first installment.

3. The Exorcist: Deceiver (2025)

A sequel to The Exorcist: Believer

Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil in The Exorcist: Believer

The Exorcist is a horror classic and one of the best movies ever made in the genre. While it’s had some weak sequels, The Exorcist: Believer was at least exciting enough to bring viewers to the box office during spooky season, grossing $136 million on its relatively small $30 million budget. Despite the film’s 22% Rotten Tomatoes score, a follow-up titled The Exorcist: Deceiver has been scheduled for April 18, 2025.

2. Ship (TBD)

A sequel to Plane

Plane gerard butler Michael Colter

Plane was another relatively small-budget 2023 movie that managed to sneak in a decent box office run, raking in $74.5 million on a $25 million budget. The Gerard Butler and Mike Colter-led action/thriller performed well enough for a sequel, which will be titled Ship. Colter is set to return for the movie, though Gerard Butler will not be starring.

1. The Blackening 2 (TBD)

A sequel to The Blackening

Robertson, Byers, Fowler, and Perkins in The Blackening

While the film initially premiered in September 2022, The Blackening didn’t have its theatrical release until nearly a year later, in August 2023. Despite hefty competition from the Barbenheimer juggernaut, The Blackening managed to gross $18 million on a $5 million budget, meriting a sequel to the horror-comedy. In an interview with Variety, writer Dewayne Perkins mentioned that he envisioned the series branching off as a Scary Movie-esque anthology, saying, “I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.”
