The sequel to Den of Thieves will be released next year and sees Gerard Butler, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and director Christian Gudegast return.
STXfilmsThe highly anticipated sequel to the Gerard Butler-led action heist movie, Den of Thieves, will release at the tail end of 2024, with Briarcliff Entertainment now acquiring the United States distribution rights.
Both Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. will return for the follow-up alongside writer and director Christian Gudegast, with the studio officially releasing the synopsis for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.
“In Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Big Nick is back on the hunt on the mean streets of Europe, closing in on Donnie, who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s biggest diamond exchange.”
Butler and Jackson Jr. return to the high-stakes world of Den of Thieves as Detective Nick “Big Nick” O’Brien and unassuming criminal mastermind Donnie Wilson respectively, with filmmaker Christian Gudegast revealing that Den of Thieves 2: Pantera “will take audiences on a breakneck, intense ride through the streets of Europe.”
“We are tremendous fans of Gerard Butler, who we’ve worked with numerous times, and are so thrilled to be on board with him, Christian Gudegast, Producer Tucker Tooley and the amazing supporting cast,” Briarcliff’s CEO Tom Ortenberg said of the sequel. “Films like this make going to the theater fun, and we can’t wait to give moviegoers the chance to see it on the big screen.”
Returning producer Tucker Tooley adds, “We are thrilled to be working with Tom and his team on Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Today’s theatrical landscape is tricky, and it takes innovation to break through. With Tom’s incredible track record and experience we feel like this exciting sequel will be in good hands.”
Gerard Butler Promises Den of Thieves 2: Pantera Will Be More Glamorous, Fun & Sexy
STXfilmsReleased in 2018, the first Den of Thieves follows Butler’s Nick O’Brien, the hard-drinking, hard-fighting leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Pablo Schreiber as Ray Merrimen, the recently paroled leader of the Outlaws, a gang of ex-military men who use their expertise and tactical skills to evade the law.
O’Brien, Merrimen, and their crews soon find themselves on a direct collision course as the criminals hatch an elaborate plan for a seemingly impossible heist involving the city’s Federal Reserve Bank.
While met with a mixed response from critics, Den of Thieves was a big hit with audiences, earning a worldwide total of $80.5 million against a production budget of $30 million.
Featuring a gloriously gruff turn from Butler, no doubt audiences cannot wait to see the return of “Big Nick” and his hunt for O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s master thief.
Butler meanwhile has promised that the sequel will be more fun and sexy than its predecessor saying, “We’re Europe-bound, we’re still on the hunt for Donnie who’s now on the diamond district in Marseilles.
I go over to hunt him down, but with different intentions than you might imagine. So we’re gonna be in Marseilles, the Alps and London – it’s definitely a more glamorous journey than the last one, and probably a more fun, sexy journey.”
Gerard Butler can next be seen in the action thriller Kandahar, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 26, 2023.
