SUMMARY
Zack Snyder looks to reunite with Warner Bros for a 300 prequel show, based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel.
The project is in the early stages of development, no writer attached yet, and Snyder currently in negotiations to direct and executive produce the show.
The show would mark a few major career milestones for Snyder, including being his first live-action TV show, as well as first major return to WB after Zack Snyder’s Justice League .
After building two franchises at Netflix, Zack Snyder looks to be gearing up to reunite with Warner Bros. for a 300 prequel show. The 2006 movie adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel served as a fictionalized retelling of the Gerco-Persian War battle in which 300 Spartans, led by Leonidas I, held off in one of history’s most famous last stand battles.
Netting mixed-to-positive reviews and over $456 million worldwide, the movie not only put Snyder on the map as a blockbuster filmmaker, but also spawned a 2014 follow-up, Rise of an Empire, which was set before, during and after the events of its predecessor.
Variety has brought word that a 300 prequel show is in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. Television, nearly 20 years after the original movie adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel hit theaters.
Though no writer is currently attached to the project, sources report that Snyder is in negotiations to both direct and executive produce the show with his production partner and wife, Deborah Snyder. Also in talks to return are fellow movie producers and executive producers Wesley Coller, Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton and Bernie Goldmann.
Snyder Returning For 300 Would Set Multiple Career Milestones
Though not yet official, should Snyder’s deal with Warner Bros. go through for the 300 prequel show, it would mark a few major career milestones for the filmmaker.
Despite their relationship getting off to a strong start with the 2006 movie as well as Watchmen and the early DC Extended Universe installments, Snyder and WB’s partnership came to an end after his departure from Justice League, both for creative reasons and a family tragedy.
He would later team with them for the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a new version of the DCEU crossover with far more footage, though even that was marred by interference from the studio.
Given Snyder has since gone on to enjoy a more creatively free relationship with Netflix on both the Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon franchises, it may come as a surprise to some that he would be going back to the studio for anything other than the in-development DC Universe reboot.
Though it’s unclear if he would be directing the entire 300 prequel show or just the pilot, he already has a full docket developing further installments of both Netflix properties. Only tackling an episode or two of the show in comparison to a full blockbuster film seems like a more feasible undertaking for Snyder to allow room for these other projects.
Another intriguing outcome if Snyder does return for the 300 prequel show would be that it is his first live-action work in the field of television.
Up to this point, the only other major shows Snyder has worked on have been the Army of the Dead prequel anime, which currently remains in a state of limbo despite production being complete, an animated prequel show to Rebel Moon and the Norse-inspired anime Twilight of the Gods. With the original 300 having put him on the map, it will be interesting to see if he elects to take on a deeper creative role on the show or a lighter one due to his full docket.
