“People are going to automatically think that” – LSU HC Kim Mulkey clears the air regarding Seimone Augustus replacing her
Kim Mulkey (L) | Seimone Augustus (R)
LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey has clarified the rumors regarding Seimone Augustus’s new role on her staff. Mulkey is entering her fourth season with the Tigers and speculation arose that Augustus might be a “coach-in-waiting.”
However, Mulkey, at 62, shows no signs of slowing down and addressed these rumors head-on.
“Obviously with her being an LSU person and playing here, people are going to automatically think that,” Mulkey stated (per On3). “But I think Seimone will quickly tell you she’s getting ready to learn from people who have been in the business a lot longer than her.”
Mulkey is always on the lookout to help her assistants and desires for them to grow into head coaches, whether at LSU or elsewhere.
“I want all of them that want to be head coaches… I want to be able to look out there and go, ‘That’s one of mine over there.”
With Mulkey’s mentorship, Augustus will aim to build upon her legacy at LSU, potentially paving the way for her to become a head coach.
Semione Augustus ready to embrace the coaching world alongside Kim Mulkey
Seimone Augustus, an LSU legend and the only player with a statue outside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, is keen to learn and grow in her new coaching role.
“I hope to be a head coach one day, but if it’s here, so be it,” Seimone Augustus said. “If not, obviously you see the expansion in the W. It would be great to go back. But day by day, that’s all.”
Augustus is taking the opportunity to become the assistant coach at LSU under Kim Mulkey with both hands. Once the program’s most important recruit, Augustus finds herself back at her alma mater, marking a full-circle moment for the former LSU star.
“Why not? I mean, it’s home,” Augustus said. “I’ve been away for over 20 years. Coming in and out whenever I had time. But it was mostly about the opportunity. Coaching has continued to come back to me over time.”
Augustus’ new role comes after her observational stint with the Los Angeles Sparks and a coaching position with Athletes Unlimited.
