Former University of Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy has landed the starting role at a major ACC program after leaving the Longhorns.

Murphy made seven appearances for Texas last season, starting two games while starter Quinn Ewers dealt with an injury. He completed 56 percent of his passes, also helping the program to two wins in Ewers’ absence as he threw for a total of 418 yards and three touchdowns in starts against BYU and Kansas State.

Despite his performances, he returned to the bench once Ewers was healthy, eventually opting to enter the transfer portal at the end of the season and relinquishing the backup role to Arch Manning.

He’s now set to be the starter for the Duke Blue Devils, who named him QB1 this week.

Duke’s path to Maalik Murphy was not an easy one. They had to stave off multiple programs, as several others were trying to land the popular signal-caller.

Teams had already tried to pry the QB from Texas before his redshirt season in 2023, so it was no surprise when he became one of the most coveted names in the portal.

Maalik Murphy’s Plans Ruined By Quinn Ewers’ Surprise Decision

Maalik Murphy was highly rated as a high school player and was recruited as a four-star prospect, committing to Texas with the aim of succeeding Ewers. However, Ewers decided to return to the Longhorns for another year, scuppering his plans.

He chose to make an exit and leave the backup job to Manning, who is now expected to become the starter next year.

The 20-year-old will look to make his mark at Duke and should be one of the more intriguing QBs in the ACC in 2024.
