Mr Chaoua said the Algerian boxer had worked hard to get where she was and was a victim of a war for control of the sport .

The storm that surrounded her erupted after Italian opponent Angela Carini withdrew from the Olympic round of 16 match after 46 seconds, in which Carini endured a series of powerful punches from Khelif.

Coach Chaoua said Khelif had felt the impact of the controversy. Khelif was able to compete at the Games after the International Olympic Committee – IOC – stripped the International Boxing Association – or IBA – of its status as the sport’s governing body and took over the boxing in Paris.

At a chaotic press conference on August 6, the IBA said Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting had been disqualified from the 2023 World Championships after sex chromosome testing showed both were ineligible.

The IOC said the genetic tests applied to Khelif and Lin were conducted without proper procedures and were flawed.

The IOC has urged the boxing community to form a new global governing body or risk the sport being left out of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Mr Chaoua, who has coached Khelif since she was a teenager, said she finished fifth in her category at the Tokyo Olympics and did not always win her matches.
