Following the fires, Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson launched the People’s Fund of Maui, claiming to provide direct financial support to the victims. They announced that the fund would give each affected survivor $1,200 and urged people to donate as much as they could. This initiative, however, quickly came under scrutiny. Critics questioned why two wealthy individuals, who could easily afford to contribute significantly more, were asking for donations from the general public. The skepticism intensified when reports surfaced that the fund’s directors were receiving exorbitant salaries, ranging from $100,000 to $400,000 annually.
