Houston Texans owner Cal McNair provided a positive update on wide receiver Tank Dell, who was injured during a shooting in Sanford, Florida nine days ago.

On Apr. 27, Tank Dell was injured during a shooting outside a nightclub in Sanford. A 16-year-old opened fire and injured 10 people, including Dell, before two heroic security guards disarmed and detained the shooter. Police arrived soon after and took the suspect into custody.

Per Kristie Rieken of the Associated Press, McNair told reporters at the Texans’ charity golf event that Dell “will make a full recovery” from the “minor wound” he suffered in the shooting:

“It looks like Tank will make a full recovery. We saw him in the office the other day and he looked good, in good spirits. But he’ll have to rehab and get back to where he was.”

Head coach DeMeco Ryans was also asked about Dell’s status for Week 1 (Houston’s opponent has yet to be announced). Per Rieken, Ryans simply stated that Dell “should be fine”, and that they had a “good” discussion.

The Texans announced the day after the shooting that Dell suffered “a minor wound” but was out of the hospital. Reports stated that the second-year wideout was an innocent bystander in the incident.

We’ll provide more details on Dell’s status and legal matters involving the suspect when they become available.

Tank Dell Was One Of Football’s Top Rookies In 2023

The Texans were football’s most surprising team in 2023, and it was largely thanks to the incredible contributions of three stud rookies in Dell, quarterback CJ Stroud and edge rusher Will Anderson Jr.

Houston drafted Dell in the third round (69th overall), and he quickly emerged as one of the top rookies of 2023. Dell racked up 47 receptions for 709 yards and seven touchdowns in just 11 games before unfortunately suffering a season-ending fractured fibula in a game against the Denver Broncos.

The Texans would advance all the way to the Divisional Round, where they fell to the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens. If they had Dell for the postseason run, there’s no telling just how much further the Texans could have gone.
