Ronaldo in the most disappointing squad of Euro 2024

According to Marca newspaper, Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku are in the most disappointing 11 players at Euro 2024.

Marca is Spain’s most widely read daily newspaper, with more than half of the country’s sports readership. The Madrid-based newspaper is close to Real Madrid and often features positively about the team. However, the most disappointing squad at Euro 2024 included a former Real player, Ronaldo.

“Ronaldo came to Euro 2024 to write a new page in history, with a record sixth participation in the tournament,” the newspaper wrote. “He also wanted to close the last Euro by scoring and leading Portugal to glory like in 2016. But it was all disappointment. He only scored in the penalty shootout, ending Portugal’s streak of 10 consecutive major tournaments scoring.”

The squad was disappointing and two other strikers failed to score, Lukaku and Dusan Vlahovic. These two players had 11 and 6 shots respectively, both without scoring, while Ronaldo had 23 chances and failed to take advantage.

Three midfielders on the list are from teams that stopped at the group stage, namely midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai (Hungary), John McGinn (Scotland) and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Serbia).

In defence, reigning champions Italy have two representatives, right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo and centre-back Gianluca Mancini, as they lost to Switzerland and were eliminated in the round of 16. Danish centre-back Andreas Christensen is also surprisingly named, with the reason being that “his leadership skills were overshadowed in four matches of the tournament”. Left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko was also named in the same disappointing team as Ukraine.

As a goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic was once among the best in the 2022 World Cup, helping Croatia finish third. However, the 29-year-old goalkeeper conceded seven goals in three matches, and his team was eliminated in the group stage.
