Gear 5 Luffy and Joy Girl Bonney in One Piece Chapter 1118

The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1118 by Eiichiro Oda, available in English from Viz Media.

The “Egghead” story arc of One Piece continues to make headlines as the series draws ever-closer to its finale. Chapter 1118 of the manga shines the spotlight brightly on Jewelry Bonney, as she uses her Devil Fruit powers to achieve a new legendary form.

One Piece Chapter 1118 picks up where the previous chapter left off. The rest of the world is reacting to Dr. Vegapunk’s cutoff message and the Five Elders are ordering a hit on the remaining Vegapunk variants (except for York). However, the meat of the story deals with Bonney taking on the Marines and Marcus Mars in his Awakened Beast Form. Monkey D. Luffy, in his Gear 5 form, encourages Bonney to fight by his side to protect the Elbaf ship. While Bonney is initially hesitant, being inspired by Luffy’s “Joy Boy” form allows her to transform into “Joy Girl” through the Distortion Future powers of her Age-Age Fruit.

One Piece releases official high-quality drone footage of the Las Vegas Sphere event, following Eiichiro Oda’s own comments on the historic moment.

While the basic ability of Bonney’s Age-Age Fruit allows Bonney to manipulate her age and others temporarily, it also has the advanced ability to let her transform herself into a possible future variant of herself for a limited time. However, this power isn’t easily achieved by Bonney merely thinking of a future version of herself and becoming it. She needs to fully believe in the vision for it to happen, meaning she needs a strong resolve and mental foundation to build on.

One Piece’s Jewelry Bonney Joy Girl Form Perfectly Mirrors Gear 5 Luffy

Bonney’s hearing about the legend of the “Sun God” Nika from her father and seeing Gear 5 Luffy in action allowed her to achieve her new Joy Girl form. Previously in “Egghead,” Bonney was able to match the stretching powers of Luffy’s Gum-Gum Fruit — or, to be more precise, the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. While Chapter 1118 ends before readers can see Joy Girl Bonney in action, theoretically, she should be able to emulate Luffy’s Gear 5 powers as well. Visually, she’s already a picture-perfect version of Gear 5 Luffy.

Even if Bonney’s Joy Girl form is more limited in time and power than Luffy’s Gear 5 form, becoming the legend she always dreamed about is a remarkable achievement for the female pirate. It also adds more fuel to the fire that Bonney will join Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. One thing is certain: the next adventure for the Straw Hat Pirates will be the kingdom of Elbaf.

The One Piece anime TV series and movies are available on streaming services like Crunchyroll and Netflix. New and previous manga chapters are available in English via Viz Media and Manga Plus. Netflix is currently developing Season 2 of its live-action One Piece TV series.
