David Beckham has shared what he still can’t believe about Lionel Messi playing for Inter Miami after joining last year.

The Herons co-owner played an integral role in bringing the forward to Florida, with Messi signing for Inter Miami in what will go down as the biggest deal in MLS and a game-changing move for soccer in the United States.

This season has seen Messi play a starring role for Inter Miami as Tata Martino’s side sit top of the Supporters’ Shield standings and currently remain unbeaten in their last nine MLS games.

And Beckham has revealed how he feels about Messi playing for Inter Miami.

Beckham ‘still can’t believe’ Messi plays for Inter Miami

Speaking on SmartLess, Beckham detailed how he still can’t get over the fact that Messi is an Inter Miami player, with the former England superstar revealing that the plan for the Herons from day one was to sign the Argentine.

Given the impact Messi has already had on soccer in the US, the reigning Ballon d’Or holder has changed everything about Inter Miami and MLS, and Beckham is still seemingly starstruck that the 36-year-old is in Florida.

Beckham said: “My vision from day one, when I presented the team and tried to put the logo together and the colours, the last slide of the presentation to the creative guys was a picture of Messi in the Miami jersey, so my dream was always to bring him to our team.”

“I still can’t believe it, every time someone turns around to me and says you have Messi in your team, it is surreal. To say we have probably the greatest player to have ever played the game, the most successful player to ever play the game, and he’s playing in Miami in the MLS.”

Beckham has done more for soccer in the US than anyone

It might be a bold statement to make, but Beckham has arguably been the most influential figure in soccer in the United States in the 21st century.

From joining the LA Galaxy at the peak of his career to helping form Inter Miami and bringing Messi to MLS, Beckham has played a huge part in building up the sport in America more than anyone else.

And with the 2026 FIFA World Cup returning to the United States, Beckham’s influence could continue to inspire the country to adopt the sport, something Messi is now doing every week.
