Kate Garraway had to interrupt Good Morning Britain to announce some breaking news during Thursday’s episode.

The host of the ITV morning news show made the announcement as she revealed that junior doctors in England have commenced a five-day strike. It began at 7am and is set to conclude at the same time on July 2. The British Medical Association (BMA) members’ strike marks the eleventh walkout since March 2023, with the association demanding a phased 35% pay rise over the coming years. In response to this, the government labelled the demands as unreasonable.

Following the announcement, NHS England warned that services would be under significant strain and called on the public to use them responsibly. Kate, after receiving the latest updates from GMB correspondent Nitya Rajan, stated: “And that is our breaking news story.”

The final day of the strike falls just two days before the General Election. The BMA has expressed its readiness for discussions and has reportedly already engaged in talks with the Labour Party. Junior doctors have claimed that Wes Streeting, Labour’s shadow health secretary, has pledged to hold discussions on July 5 if his party wins the election.

However, Mr Streeting cautioned that he would not be able to fulfil the 35% demands, explaining that doing so would prompt “any trade union worth their salt” to make similar requests. The politician has acknowledged there’s “space for a discussion” on salaries and is also open to talks about enhancing working conditions for trainee doctors.

NHS chiefs have sounded the alarm over potential “major disruption” due to the planned strikes, which are expected to hit “almost all routine care”. On Wednesday (June 26), NHS England released a statement saying: “The NHS will face major disruption this week as junior doctors launch five days of industrial action, with services already under increasing pressure.”

Matthew Taylor, the NHS Confederation’s chief executive, commented: “Holding strikes in the middle of an election campaign when no political party is in a position to bring the dispute to a close is a bitter pill to swallow for staff who have to plug the gaps and patients who will have their appointments cancelled or delayed.”

Last week, presenter Kate had to get co-host Adil Ray to step in and help when she became “flustered” on air. Kate and Adil had cut back to the studio from a segment on the General Election but she appeared to be caught off guard. The host attempted to read off the autocue, but as she tucked her hair behind her ear, she visibly struggled.

In a high-pitched voice, Kate held her hands up and said: “I was just having a hair crisis! I’m going to be honest.” She started to laugh as Adil jumped out of his seat and grabbed hold of Kate’s head. “Let me just check this hair now,” he said. Adil smoothed his co-host’s hair down and returned to his seat, adding: “Yeah, it looks like it normally does.” But Kate explained: “People are saying my hair looks sweaty and it flustered me for a moment. But I’m back, with news and politics now.”
