Eamonn Holmes has slammed the Olympics opening ceremony.

Taking to his GB News show on Monday, the former ITV star dragged Friday night’s show at the Paris 2024 games. Joining viewers’ confusion at the out-there, hours-long event, Eamonn called the ordeal a “load of pretentious rubbish” earlier this morning.

With a performance from Celine Dion seemingly saving the day, it was Lady Gaga that was one of the first to take to the stage. Her performance didn’t seem to go down well with Eamonn either. “I didn’t know what she was singing about,” he told co-host Ellie Costello.

“She looked very well and it was all very nice. I tell you what, I would have stayed with it to wait for Celine Dion, but I didn’t,” he continued. “Three hours of that? I’m not sure.” His comments come after similar reviews from live TV viewers on the BBC on Friday.

Despite the glitz, glamour and celebrity appearances (and a few sound issues), viewers were concerned that the 2024 opening ceremony hasn’t matched or surpassed the brilliance of the London 2012 Opening Ceremony, which famously included a sketch featuring the late Queen Elizabeth II and Daniel Craig as James Bond.

One viewer vented on social media: “France is doing good but it’s getting nowhere near the 2012 London Olympics #OpeningCeremony. That James Bond bit is goated! “. Another chimed in with less than impressed remarks: “12 years later and ten minutes in and this #OpeningCeremony is clearly coming nowhere near to London 2012.”

Meanwhile, a third shared their disapproval: “I’m sorry but this has to be the worst Olympic opening ceremony in memory. It’s an interesting idea bringing the athletes in on boats but it looks rubbish and misses the roar of the crowd. Sorry but not for me.”

Further criticism came from another saying: “Just turned on the Olympic opening ceremony and it’s like I’ve entered some kind of fucking hellish fever dream. What the shit is happening? ” In addition, another added their voice to the chorus of naysayers: “This is the worst opening ceremony ever. The performances are not giving. Its all over the place.”

The complaints continued with one spectator suggesting some light-hearted commentary: “This #OpeningCeremony would really benefit from Graham Norton’s commentary questioning what the hell is going on. Anyone else finding this just bizarre and hard to follow? ” And yet another lamented the quality of the event: “I’m sorry but the Paris Olympics #OpeningCeremony is bad. I can’t believe the mess I’m watching. Nothing so far has matched the London 2012 one which was spectacular. Also the Beijing one in 2008.”
