Eva Speakman has detailed the difficulties she faced at the hands of trolls when she and husband Nik became regular faces on This Morning.

The pair, who are collectively known as The Speakmans, are life-change experts who  help others with mental health problems, trauma and phobias.

But speaking on the My Dirty Laundry podcast this week, Eva, 55, revealed she was attacked by cruel trolls when she appeared on the show.

It was especially hurtful because Eva had suffered a lifetime of bullying before becoming a household name.

She said: ‘We have really had our fair share of trolling and at first, I’m not going to lie… particularly when we first started working in television, I found it quite difficult.

‘I was somebody that was bullied through my entire childhood, even up until I met Nik, actually.

‘And so I’d gone from that and then Nik kind of came rescued me, helped me to build up my self-esteem again and self-belief.

‘Then suddenly these strangers were saying really mean and horrible things. And so I did have to sit back a little bit and say, “Does this really matter? Is this person’s opinion really valid? What’s my motive on being in the media?”

‘It’s to help people. Am I doing that? Yes.’

Eva said that with Nik’s help, she quickly found a way to stop the trolling getting to her.

She said: ‘We just very quickly got into the habit of just blocking. And that would be what I would say to anybody. Don’t even take the bait. Just block and just move on because they’re not really very relevant people.

‘Anybody who feels that it’s appropriate to be unkind to anyone, quite honestly, isn’t worth any time at all. So just block immediately.’

Eva and Nik, 65, have previously used their expertise to cure former This Morning host Holly Willoughby of her fear of ghosts, as well as her fear of flying.

They said: ‘Holly was having to fly out the following week to help present I’m A Celeb so we were able to help her out with that which was nice.

‘Her fear came from presenting a kids’ TV show. She had to go up in a plane and the pilot who was with her – it was just a two seater – stalled the engine on purpose/

‘And she just thought the plane was going down. And then he just said, “we do this, it’s a test that we do” and he restarted it, everything was OK.

‘But in that moment and her not knowing, she just developed a fear of flying. And we worked with her for that.’

The Speakmans said their treatment was so successful that Holly even sent them a picture of herself giving a thumbs up from her flight the week after they treated her.

Nik and Eva met 33 years ago during a chance encounter. Eva’s car had been stolen and Nik offered to help her out at a time when people didn’t really own mobile phones.

Eva said: ‘Nik had one. It was huge. It was one of those briefcase ones, like Dom Joly had.

‘When my car was stolen, I just wanted to use a telephone. So I went into this office to ask if I could use theirs. There was this dude there looking very smart in a suit with a permed mullet.

Despite the fact that Nik was flying to America in a few hours and hadn’t packed yet, he phoned the police for me and let my family know what had happened.

‘He was just so lovely, When he came back from the States, I wanted to take him out for lunch to say thank you.

‘I didn’t fancy him at all, but just thought he was a very pleasant and very, very sweet chap. So I took him for lunch and the rest is history, as they say.

‘We’ve been together 33 years, have two kids, five cats, two snakes, two tarantulas and three lizards.’

Nik and Eva and their two children Olivia and Hunter have released a new podcast called Handbook To Happiness.

Eva said: ‘The podcast is literally jam packed with lots of helpful tips and information. It’s a very candid and very open discussion about our own insecurities, our fears, the things that have happened in our lives, people that we’ve helped, how we’ve managed to help them.

‘There’s a lot of laughs as well. I think that’s the lovely thing about a family dynamic that you can’t get away with anything when your kids are there.

‘They’ll totally rat you out. And rat each other out, I hasten to add. In the best and funniest way. But the headline, obviously the concept is that, so many years we’ve said, would it be great if there was a handbook to life and there isn’t one.

Nik added: ‘You know, you get your heart broken and you turn to page 25 and it tells you how to deal with it and you know, you lose someone and you turn to page 50, etcetera.

‘So this is what we’re trying to create with the podcast – it’s like a handbook to life.

‘We talk about tips and things and life, really great information on how you can be more positive, how you can gain more confidence, how you can overcome a phobia, OCD, traumas.

‘And how to be more positive and a whole host of other things including like body dysmorphia, comparison, judgment, health anxiety, fear of death, all these topics.’
