Tom Cruise performed a breathtaking leap from the top of the Stade de France as the Olympics staged a showstopping finale.

The Mission: Impossible star, 62, plunged 35 metres from the roof on a rope into the arena, before heading to meet the Mayor of Los Angeles and gymnast Simone Biles. He then drove off on a motorbike, carrying the US flag. It was a classic conclusion to the greatest show on earth.

In a special video segment, he was seen riding the motorbike all the way to Los Angeles, before climbing to the top of the Hollywood sign and turning its famous letters into the 5 Olympic rings. Team GB’s flagbearers were two of our gold medallists who lit up the Games. Trampolinist Bryony Page and triathlon star Alex Yee smiled as they stepped into the arena, proud to have played their part in the spectacle.

Bryony, 33, of Crewe, Cheshire, who is retiring after the Games to join the Cirque du Soleil as an acrobat, and Alex, 26, from Lewisham, South East London, walked with flag-bearers from 205 delegations representing countries around the world. They were soon joined by our team, dressed in Ben Sherman floral shirts, dancing and waving to the crowd.

Around 9,000 athletes flooded the arena after French President Emmanuel Macron had thanked Thomas Bach, the retiring International Olympic Committee President.

The French team, in white tracksuits, were given the biggest cheer of the night as they entered the Stade de France with many running to the 71,500 spectators in the crowd. Many athletes took the opportunity to show off their medals to the cameras.

Bryony completed her full Olympic set with gold in Paris, after her silver at Rio 2016 and bronze in Tokyo. She said: “To have won an Olympic gold at my third Games and now to be given this honour, it just caps the incredible experience that Paris 2024 has been for me.”

Alex was chosen after he became the most successful Olympic triathlete ever with two medals in Paris. I was just yards away, in the front row of the stands, as he sped past on the final straight to his Olympic gold.

Against the stunning backdrop of the Pont Alexandre III, he timed his finish to perfection. He overcame the triple threat of the world’s best, the currents of the Seine and the searing heat. But he broke down moments after he crossed the line, overwhelmed by mum Emma’s three simple words: “I love you.”

He said of that moment, ideally situated in the City of Love: “The first people you want to see are your friends and family. They have been there throughout everything. That was one of my proudest moments of the Games.”

In fact, from the moment Celine Dion appeared on the Eiffel Tower in the barnstorming opening ceremony, there was a realisation that this most beautiful of cities was the perfect backdrop for the sporting spectacle.

The rain came; the Seine was not ready; the Communists tried to stop the trains; Sir Andy Murray played his final ever game at Roland Garros; records fell; and some unexpected stars were born.

Like British Olympic champion climber Toby Roberts, the 19-year-old who used to clamber out of his cot as a baby, and just kept going. But there is always another side to the moments of glory. For triathlete Kate Waugh, 23, of Gateshead, there were tears as she told how the currents of the Seine had wrecked her medal hopes.

Three years of hard work and determination, carried away on a tidal surge. Many of the most memorable moments came inside the impressive Olympic venues, in the heat of the Velodrome, or the La Defense arena, a rugby stadium transformed with two pools built in just 36 days.

The French went mad for Leon Marchand as he won four gold medals. And the Stade de France, where the games ended last night, was the scene of many of the greatest stories.

Keely Hodgkinson clenching her fist as she won that elusive 800m gold; our 400m star Matthew Hudson-Smith missing out in a dip for the line; Josh Kerr beating his old rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen, only to see American Cole Hocker snatch a shock 1,500m Olympic title. It was 16 days of thrills and spills…. and that was before Tom Cruise dropped in.

Fans loved seeing the megastar take to the stage, with one writing: “This was the most American and Los Angeles closing ceremony ever! Tom Cruise jumping off a stadium and plane and Red Hot Chili Peppers and Billie Eilish!

“I literally called Tom Cruise jumping off of something! #closingceremony,” whilst a second added: “Okay, I’m watching Tom Cruise entering Stade De France, then Red Hot Chili Peppers, and now Billie Eilish. #ClosingCeremony.” A third penned: “The USA said, “don’t worry we got it from here.” And already gave us Tom Cruise and three big artists. #ClosingCeremony.”

Tom had been seen filming earlier this year for the Olympics, where he was recorded scaling the iconic Hollywood sign, as part of the video that was aired. The Hollywood actor has made regular appearances at the Games this year. He was seen standing with pop star Ariana Grande as they watched Simone Biles’ incredible gymnastic skills.

And the actor isn’t shy about doing his own stunts and recently, The Mirror exclusively obtained photos of the Hollywood star filming in Oxfordshire, where he was seen dangling from a plane flying upside-down.

“When the plane flips upside down, Cruise – who did not appear to be wearing a parachute – is left hanging off it,” a source said. “The characters appeared to be filming a fight scene where they grapple with one another before the plane turns upside down. The pilot was dressed all in green, suggesting he will be removed from the scene and Cruise and Morales will be the only ones in the plane.”
