Anthony Joshua was reason Tyson Fury didn’t sign with Eddie Hearn

Eddie Hearn has been in Anthony Joshua’s corner throughout his professional career and insists his relationship with the Brit is why he could never sign his rival, Tyson Fury

Eddie Hearn has huge admiration for Anthony Joshua

Eddie Hearn admits his deep relationship with Anthony Joshua was a major factor in his decision not to sign Tyson Fury.

The two Brits have been among the most dominant forces in the heavyweight division for the best part of a decade. Never have they faced off, but they’ve held numerous belts and laid claim to being the best in the business, backed by their respective promoters.

Hearn has been in Joshua’s corner since day one with Fury being flanked by Frank Warren, who oversaw his return to the pinnacle of the sport after several years away. Hearn admits his relationship with Joshua has gone deeper as the years have gone on and he wouldn’t want to put any strain on that by also having Fury in his camp.

He told GRM Daily: “For me, you get to a point where you want to have relationships and journeys – you want to make money – but the journey I’ve been on with AJ, we’ll never forget, and I don’t want to fall out with him because I signed Tyson Fury.

“The one thing about my relationship with AJ is it’s real. We’re honest with each other, we’re on a level with each other, we’d never lie to each other. It only takes one line at a presser when I’m up there with Tyson Fury and I go ‘this guy’s the best heavyweight in the world ‘ and then he’s like ‘what?’ That can all change

“Very few times do you start a journey with a fighter from their pro debut to the end of their career and you can have though conversations, glasses of wine when it’s all said and do and say ‘we had a good run’.”

Joshua has lost three of his professional fights – two of those to undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. The window for him and Fury did fight may have closed with both men eyeing the belts held by the Ukrainian, although there has often been talk of an all-British bout.

It looked close at one point before the deadline passed with each camp claiming the other was to blame for the failure to get it over the line. Hearn has also confessed he met with Fury during the period where he wasn’t fighting and had put on huge amounts of weight.

The promoter concedes he didn’t believe the Gypsy King had it in him to eventually return and achieve what he went on to do – but also didn’t even think he could stand alongside and back him all while he ultimately wanted Joshua to turn him over.

“He came to see me in Monaco once when he was at his worst, 27 stone, sweating,” said Hearn. “What he came back from was remarkable, I sat with him and didn’t believe he’d get back to where he did. But also, I thought how can I put my heart and soul into you when I’ve got this guy and I really want him to beat you.”
