“COWARDLY RABBIT”! David Benavidez slams Canelo for preferring to vacate belt and face Edgar Berlanga instead of him

Despite increasing fan pressure to face David Benavidez, Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez will instead defend his super-middleweight belts against Puerto Rico’s Edgar Berlanga this September.

The fight – which will see just three belts on the line as the Mexican will be stripped of one and no longer be undisputed – has received some backlash from fans despite Berlanga being undefeated and the WBA’s number one contender.

It stems from the desire to see Canelo in with Benavidez, who is far and away the most deserving challenger in the division and has been impressing with each performance.

Speaking to 2ToneDaSupastar, Benavidez said that the fight – announced for September 14 in Las Vegas – was ‘trash’ and that nobody wanted to see it.

“Trash ass fight. I think nobody wants to see that. But, at the end of the day, I don’t think Canelo faces the strongest opposition. It is what it is.”

Asked why he recently opted to continue his career at light-heavyweight for the foreseeable rather than stick around at 168 and force a mandatory against Canelo, the 27-year-old explained his decision.

“I’ve been mandatory for the past three years. I can’t force a man to fight me, you know what I mean? It shouldn’t even come to a position where you have to activate your mandatory. What is the interim title for? That’s basically activating your mandatory. They got a lot of weird stuff going on over there. At the end of the day I gotta move on with my career and keep trying to win titles.”

Benavidez is now mandatory for the winner of the undisputed 175lbs clash between Dmitry Bivol-Artur Beterbiev. Whether the Canelo fight ever happens is anybody’s guess.
